My husband (White) and I (Black) have been in this area for four weeks due to his job. I was skeptical about coming to NC because of the horror stories I’ve seen on Instagram. The Robbinsville and surrounding areas have been good to venture out in, as we are pretty active outdoors anyway. There are national forests, parks, rivers and waterfalls here that have been nice to visit; so we’ve been out and about very frequently. The Cherokee Nation was heavy in this area and you can tell by the names of things; good to see that hasn’t been erased and the natives are still being recognized and respected in that manner. Folks are nice, no weird stares or anything. Service at places like restaurants has been friendly. I haven’t ventured out by myself, but I rarely do that anywhere. I’ve come across only a handful of other black people; sometimes we can be out all day and I never see anyone that looks like me.
