My traveling while Black experience in Waikiki beach was positive. It was a solo trip. I rented a car and drove up the west coast shoreline. I only got out of my car in beaches where there lots of people enjoying the beach. There were lots of tent cities along the way.
If you like luxury accommodations, I highly recommend Ka La’i Waikīkī Beach. They are renovating until Q2 but honestly, it didn’t impact my stay. I was upgraded to a new 1100 sf room with a view where I could watch the sunset and the Friday fireworks. Staff went out their way to ensure my comfort and satisfaction.
The hotel is slightly away from the hustle and bustle of Hawaiian Village but it’s still in walking distance.

Traveling While Black
Amazing trip. A wonderful time with nature. I avoided the touristy spots. The hiking trails, waterfalls, smoking, scuba diving, local dishes, the open market, the volcanos, and the weather were all perfect.

Traveling While Black
I went with a group of 8 to celebrate my dad’s 70th birthday and stayed on a Waikiki Beach Resort. Hilton Hawaiian Village was a great place to stay because of day and night activities, beach access, several pools, mountain and ocean view rooms and more. Over our 4 days there, we ventured off resort for a Sunset Dinner Cruise on the Star of Honolulu and a tour of Pearl Harbor National Memorial. We also attended a Starlight Luau, Fireworks on the beach while at the resort. It was my second time on Oahu but a first for the group I planned for. They really enjoyed the mix of activities, culture and time to relax. Everything I planned for was also wheelchair accessible. Before going, I wondered if it would be too short of a trip but because it was a short trip we really maximized our time and enjoyed it before traveling home. I would recommend Oahu for families, couples or even solo – plenty to do. Keep it mind most of the Waikiki Beach area is metropolitan city vibes. Tip: Plan ahead and you may be able to get around Waikiki/Honolulu without renting a car. I booked a roundtrip private transport for the airport and most off site activities offered an extra transportation shuttle option which made it easy to get to and from our hotel and directly to the activities. Enjoy!
