The touristy area is considered Copacabana and Inpanema. However, even in these areas the is an alarming amount of poverty. And depending where you are it can get a bit sketchy at night. If you want a more relaxed vibe with good dining options I’d also consider Leblon. Santa Teresa seemed like a viable option as well. I went durning carnival so we paid 3 times what the properties are typically worth but generally speaking most hotels these areas are very affordable by American standards Barra de tijuca seemed like you could get a lot more bang for your buck. The hotels are a lot more modern but it’s quite a ways out (about 30 min without traffic to Copacabana).
I love this city! It’s often overlooked when compared to Capetown but it has a lot t offer. Joberg is the first place I ever bungee jumped. And of a freaking power station. The Orlando power station is great for adventure seekers. And the rates are super affordable.
There are several beautiful islands just a ferry ride away that are perfect for a get away from the city for a day or two of relaxation (Rosairo Islands). I personally visited Isla Grande. I wish I had time to explore other islands as well. There was an option to island hop but only visiting one allowed for more time to enjoy. The resort we visited had the most amazing food. Although it’s a perfect place to just lay on the beach and relax, there were still plenty of activities (snorkel, scuba, paddle boarding, bike riding...).
