My wife and I did our first steps in Philippines with Coron Island where we spent 5 nights (december 2018).
We stayed 2 nights at The Coron underwater garden resort and 3 nights at The Busuanga Island paradise. The first one was ok but less impressive than the Google pictures (or maybe they did some renovations) but I remember that you have a big difference between a standard bungalow (which looks like more to a hostel room) and a deluxe bungalow (more confortable but not as a 3 stars hotel).
The second one was perfect for us :
– 10 min by scooter from the center of the rushing Coron (you can hire a scooter for few pesos there or just ask the staff to drop you off for free to the downtown),
– in the middle of the forest,
– peaceful and cheap for the quality of the accomodation (if you are looking for a quiet and peaceful place to stay in Coron I highly recommand this place).
Coron island offers a little bit less of actractions than El Nido but the island is more chill and quiet.
Main stuffs to see or do are focus around water activities but if like me you need to see some green and forest you can still do :
– The Mount Tapyas (easy hike of 45 min where you will see all the Coron city, best time to do sunset or sunrise)
– And the Calauit Wildlife sanctuary (a “wild” animal reserve where you will be able to see zebras and girafes).
If you plan to visit El Nido you can definitely add a stop to Coron island.

If you’re into a relaxing but also adventurous trip, I encourage you to stay on the house boat on Coron Island! This means you will fly to Coron, and then have to take a boat across to Coron Island. I booked through AirBnB, and it is hosted by Pablo. It’s the only place to stay on Coron Island, so make sure to search for that. The food is good and it’s really amazing waking up on the water. I actually fell asleep on the hammock on the roof for the first night. You can see ALL the stars, which is also quite romantic for a couple. You’ll have free access to Kayaks and Paddleboards, which you can use to go explore Twin lagoon before any of the tourist groups arrive, or after they’ve left. Sunsets and sunrises are absolutely breathtaking, and the water is an incredible shade of blue. Dare I say the reefs around the island were more gorgeous than the Great Barrier Reef! This island is sacred for the local Tagbanua Tribe, who have controlled it since the beginning of time. It was never colonised and they take care to ensure that it stays beautiful, so be careful about what body products you use, as they don’t want to contaminate the water. From the boat, you can also organise other tours where they can take you to places a bit further away. Highly highly recommend visiting this island.
What can I say? I loved Coron. It is very similar to El Nido but a lot less smaller. The people here are so kind and sweet, and they take pride in just about everything they do. Here we stayed in Coron Soleil Garden Hotel. Everyone here was super friendly and the food was amazing. Beds were super comfy.
My favorite part of Coron was the private island tour. Like El Nido, I opted for the private tour because you pretty much are able to go at your own pace and beat the crowds. We booked this though our hotel for about $80. With this you got your own boat and got to pick whatever you wanted to eat for lunch. We opted for seafood. The food was amazing! The fruit and seafood were amazing. Because we had our own boat we got to choose whatever order island hopping we wanted to go in. We chose to visit the twin lagoons first as there were less crowds a that time. This one was hands down my favorite. The crystal blue water was amazing to see. i would definitely recommend coming to Coron!
