We visited Fez in July-August 2022. First off – it’s HOT. It’s the desert and it’s about 110 during the day and drops to about 100 at night time. The ground holds the heat. We knew that going in, but if you do not like the heat, I’d suggest waiting until the fall.
We booked our Moroccan holiday through Travel World India, which we found on Travelzoo. We modified a 10 day tour to a 5 day tour. We flew in and out of Casablanca, and traveled from Casablanca to Ifrane, Meknes, Fez, Rabat and Marrakech. We had the same guide and driver the entire time and it was three of us. It’s a bit pricier, but I highly recommend this way of travelling, especially for safety reasons.
Our guide did an amazing job of balancing history, culture and inserting activity and we had plenty of time to rest. We visited several Medinas and tried Moroccan food in Riads. In Fes we visited a tannery to see how leather is made, Art Naji – to watch how they create authentic Mosaic pieces, we walked through the Medina and purchased a Berber rug and we visited several Mosques and temples.
Our guide was clutch in explaining where to go and what to see, his name is Abdul.
We had no issues with traveling while black. We’d visited Northern African previously, so we were familiar with what to expect in a Muslim country. We embraced the culture, adhered to dressing modestly and genuinely enjoyed learning about the history.
There is certainly plenty to do.
Try to find a local guide or you may get lost in the Medina. You can visit the leather tannery (it smells funky but the right guide will give you a mint leaf to place under your nose), you can press leaves and olives to create your own oils, they’ll overcharge you for clothes (don’t forget to barter).
If you’re back feeling adventurous, go on a tour to the mountains and feed monkeys (they’re aggressive af).
When you order a meal, be mindful as pigeon is a delicacy.
Fez is such a wonderful city to visit, the locals are very nice and the food…exquisite ! One of our favourite places to eat was ‘ Le Tarbouche’. We were a group of 3 black girls and felt very safe, the people were very respectful. Don’t be afraid to negociate when buying something and choose to stay in a riad instead of a hotel.
I used intrepid travel to maneuver from city to city. While in Fez, I visited the Royal palace, the tannery, and the medina. Fez was my least favorite city in Morocco. I would skip it.
We stayed at a beautiful Riad called Riad El Amin. Theee perfect backdrop for instagram photos lol! But on a more serious note..The staff there were so kind and accommodating. Once we arrive we they served us some mint tea and some yummy cookies to go with it. I would highly recommend this Riad.
