The Filipinos are deeply racist because they are ignorant. In the Philippines, education is not a priority. Most people do not complete high school, and the credentialing system for teachers is weak and ineffective.
If you are black, you will receive stares and racist comments everywhere you go in this country, because it’s people are too ignorant to know better. I own my own business and generated 125,000USD in profit, not including income from the rental properties I own in the DC metro area. Despite this, I was treated no differently than a common felon. I would say F these people, but the lasting impact of colonialism has already done it for me. I understand that colorism was normalized by European colonizers globally for centuries on end, but to so fundamentally fail to reject the ideas of your colonizers is pathetically unacceptable.
Had a 21 hour layover in Manila and decided to leave the airport! Pro tip, if you’re getting to the airport later, after 11pm, Grab may not be available and there may be a traffic jam! The airport taxis charge insane amounts, 1700+ pisos to Makati, so use the metered taxis. It should be about 200-400 pisos depending on how far you’re going!
My BLACK Experience was initially meh. I got stared at at a local mall a LOT, but not nasty stares, just curious?? I also wasn’t in a touristy area, not to mention I saw no tourists even when I went to the SM Mall of Asia.
However when I went into Manila, I was greeted with a lot of smiles, hellos, good afternoon ma’am, allat! It was a great experience, I even found out Filipino men are interested in me which I did not expect lol! But people were so nice, so many people also speak English so the language barrier shouldn’t scare you if you want to go. Highly recommend for the beautiful views, the kind people, the amazing food, and more (that I didn’t get to experience but will when I go back)!
