I took a weekend getaway to Quito, Ecuador . I stayed at a Luxury Airbnb for $75 a night with an amazing view of Quito. I booked a day tour to go see the Quilotoa Lagoon. The lagoon had llama’s to take pictures with a great view. I also visit Ciudad Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the Earth ), Basilica del Voto Nacional, & the Centro Historico de Quito. I ate at two Vegan Restaurants called Tandana & Identidad Natural. The food was delicious. Uber was really cheap. The average cost per ride was around $2-$3 USD. I highly recommend visiting Ecuador .
I was in Quito for about six weeks and my experience was nice. I stayed with a host family during that time but I know that if I had to look for my own place, I would have gotten an Airbnb.
As fas as traveling here while black, I would say that this was one of the least-black friendly areas.
In the city, black women.. or dark skinned women are usually only seen in strip clubs so when my friend and I were there while studying, we were not favored. Many people would not even look at or they would think negatively of us. Many people would stare!!!! As far as going out and doing things, this did not prevent us from having a good time with the rest of our friends. Things in this area were very fairly priced and it was easy to get around by walking or bus. I would say that if you plan to walk, be mindful of the altitude as that will probably make it harder to walk up hills than normal.
Make sure to try the guinea pig! One thing that I also remember, in relation to food is that their cheese tastes VERY different. It definitely caught my friend and I by surprise and not in a pleasant way so be mindful if you are sensitive to things like that.
Quito sits on the side of the Andes Mountains. Its a metropolitan city with warm afternoons and beautiful nights. Quito has a colorful culture with hearty meals to fill your belly. The restaurants are excellent and downtown is a perfect mix of past and present. Old Quito is a historic canvas with cobblestone streets, a must see!
