The only time I really saw people of color was when I was near my hostel, about 40 minutes commute from the city center. That being said, I never felt uncomfortable or like I was treated differently anywhere in the city. I did however feel like I was watching every white stereotype in real time (like giant ads for Mayo and brightly mismatched clothes while people tanned in the park). Nothing to complain about but it was interesting and a bit expensive.
Took my daughter on a graduation trip and we spent 3 days in Amsterdam. It was a beautiful experience. Took a river cruise, LOTS OF WALKING, visited a few markets… Good cultural mix. Never felt out of place or uncomfortable, except for the cyclist! My Lord, they are everywhere and feel more dangerous that automobiles. VERY AGGRESSIVE RIDERS! Good times though! Rate 8 out of 10…
Cool night life if you’re into 90’s/2000’s hiphop and R&B. Great food and lots of different sites to see. Try it you might like it and if you a party person. Clubs don’t close til 6-7am. S/N it may be a bit pricey with the conversion rates but it’s well worth the experience. And if you’re into the herbal remedy. Amsterdam has a plethora of options outside of what you’re used to locally
Amsterdam is a beautiful city. Canals and waterways provide the perfect backdrop for photos. The historical museums and architecture are great. The live music, shopping, and transportation around the city is pretty good. The Red Light District, the vices you can experience, and the bars provide great nightlife as well.
BETA TEST
I only visited Amsterdam during an extremely long layover on my way to Switzerland. I took a bus tour and in that short period of time learned a lot of history and saw places I had read about in history books. We went to Ann Frank’s house, visited the red light district, stopped at windmills and tulip fields and even bought a pair of wooden shoes for my daughter. It was fun although I was only there for such a short period of time.
Its extremely difficult to categorize this tip as “traveling while black” because as a tourist, I believe blacks are “tolerated”. Not to take away anyone’s traveling experience where they’ve particularly dealt with discrimination. Due to the rich discriminatory and racist history in the Netherlands, our personal experience was not particularly uncomfortable or we were not overtly aware we were black tourist in Amsterdam. I’ll preface this tip that way. Part of our ignorance could be due to the fact we were distracted by all that Amsterdam had to offer. We felt free to roam the city throughout. We stayed in a mixed residential and commercial area in a commercial hotel chain. We utilized public transportation each day into the city. We arrived during the week, so we were a part of the day to day hustle. The Netherlands were stop 1 or 3 during this European excursion for us. We were especially excited to take part in all of the tourist attractions we’d researched prior to arriving. There are several “beat the line” ticket purchase options that are super helpful to take advantage of if you want to maximize your time. Else you could stand in line half the day for some of these things. One popular attraction is the “Anne Frank House”. The lines were hours long. We did everything here. We blended in what seemed to be a pretty diverse tourist and local population. We have a tradition of hitting McDonalds and Starbucks wherever we travel to get a since of how they market to the demographic. We shop with the same focus as well. I typically research all the things locals do to get a since of life outside of tourism and tourism alike. To that end, I tried the herring. It was definitely an acquired taste. Super rich and fatty. I mistakingly ate it with my hands. Even after washing with soap, my hands smelled of fish hrs after. We cruised the canal tours. Strolled through the red light district where we got to see some of the freakiest toy stores and window shows. Stopped in the infamous coffee shops and had one of the best nights in a long time thanks to an enhanced ECS system. The Hash museum was dope!! Our trip out to Paris via train was nostalgic and relaxing. There wasn’t an abundant amount of brown, butterscotch and black faces. But again we were not overtly aware we were traveling while black in the Netherlands!! There’s so much to explore. As with every travel destination, if you desire more than a lazy vacation and venture out for more, do your research to optimize the experience. Enjoy!!!
I absolutely loved Amsterdam. Bummed that we aren’t allowed to travelled there at the moment, wanted to go back in the spring/summer to see the tulips. Amsterdam is so rich with culture and history you can’t help but fall in love with the city. We did a canal tour and even though it was raining we still had a blast, we visted the Heineken factory—dope experience, and got to drink a lot of beer there. We visited the moco museum, it was cool; the banksy exhibit there was amazing! The food in Amsterdam was amazing, enjoyed every bit of it. The Anne frank house was more thank I expected it to be, intense but enlightening. Everyone is tall there, the entire family! I did almost get knocked over by a bike about 4 times so be aware! Traveling while black wasn’t an issue I’m Amsterdam, literally saw people from all walks of life out there. Def visiting again.
Amsterdam is a very nice city . My favorite thing to do is renting a bike and riding around the city . For me it’s the best way to visit Amsterdam . There are many shop to rent a bike like mike bike , black bike ect..
For 3 days , i paid 45 euros with insurance included .
I recommend bed and breakfast flynt to stay . The owner is very nice , you can have a very good breakfast and it’s at 10 minutes with bike from Amsterdam centraal.
There’s not much things to do except visit some museum , rent a bike ect.. but to chill is the place to be .
I personally did not like Amsterdam it was okay the first two or three days after all the tourist stuff was out of the way the red light District, Coffee Shops, Heineken, museums, windmills, tulips or just walking around it was nice to see something new. I am a bit of a party person and I found the nightlife to just be very blah to boring. It was not a swanky place at all… It was very plain in every aspect.
We scheduled a lover layover in Amsterdam on our way to Ghana so we would have time to go explore. A quick train ride from the airport and we right downtown. I wish the weather was a bit warmer, although it was sunny being right by the water made it a bit chilly. I hate the cold so I couldn’t enjoy everything as much as I wanted but it was still a pleasant experience. I would definitely go back and spend more time, especially to check out all the hype around the red light district.
Amsterdam was a cool experience. With its tree-lined canals and endless rows of bicycles, it’s very photogenic. I’m a history buff, so visiting the Anne Frank House was the highlight of my trip. Buy your tickets in advance to avoid waiting on a very long line. Only a few people are allowed in at one time and no photography is allowed. This allows you to really appreciate the tiny space Anne and her family hid in for 2 years.

Other interesting things to do are visit The Museum of Fluorescent Art and Foam (photography museum), admire the tulips in Vondel Park, stroll through the Red Light District, take a photo with the I Am Amsterdam sign, and go on a free walking tour through the city center. The major museums are really expensive, so you may only want to pick one to visit. I opted for the Van Gogh Museum and I’m glad I did. It provided a great overview of his life and the inspiration behind some of his most famous pieces.
Amsterdam was cool I only spent 48 hrs there I def must go back to experience more. Here I things I did while there!!
Things to do –
Pancake Bakery
Local Cannabis Shop
Canal Tour
Red Light District
Coffee Shop (Smoke Weed) I had fun at “Basjoe” but there so many!!
Cafe De Duivel (Hip Hop Night Life)
I AMsterdam Sign
Van Gogh & Anne Frank Museum
Try Diff Types Of Stroopwaffles
Train to Burussels
I love visiting Amsterdam. From the shopping to the cute eateries and cafe, there’s such a variety to experience in Amsterdam. Likewise, I enjoy bike riding through the Netherlands and the experience of the culture. The cost of everything is pretty affordable but you definitely should convert your money prior to arriving.
Loved it here. We rented an airbnb room and took public transportation everywhere. Be aware, the trams don’t take cards or USD. We went to the Anne Frank museum(make reservations before hand jic). Sex museums are bomb and entertaining. Lots of shopping and great food to grab at vendors. Coffee shops of course are excellent..love ! Everywhere is perfect for photo ops.
It was fun, flew in through Germany. Awkward experience of its own walking through the airport since we were the only of few black people there, but no one was rude. Traveled to Netherlands for a week during Christmas holiday. It was a great place to experience, although I wish to return during Spring/ Summer to do more activities. Great intro to 420, everyone was nice in Netherlands, really kind and helpful. Really dope music and art too.
Amsterdam is my most favorite city in the world!!! It is the perfect place for a backpacker looking for convenience. Starting with the convenience of the airport to the train station in the center of the city it does not get any better. I have been to Amsterdam multiple times and I always find a hostel or Airbnb in walking distance or tram appropriate. I personally like hostels like St. Christophers because they are affordable and allow for private rooms. Keep in mind you will most likely have to pay to store your luggage before or after your stay but hostel bar prices will make up for it.
I suggest staying near the De Wallen in the red light district. It is near all bars, clubs & coffee shops.
Amsterdam is amazing. I went with my father for his 60th birthday. We started in London, then Paris and Amsterdam was our last stop. It’s perfect to end a European holiday because it’s so relaxing. We stayed at the Hotel Amrath, an older historical hotel. We visited the markets, Heineken experience and did several canal tours. We were there for three days and that was just enough time. Amsterdam is very walkable and the locals are amazing.
Amsterdam is a great city to visit and tour in Europe.
It’s great for shopping (especially if you’re into high end luxury brands) and cruising on the lake canals.
It is also great to visit during the summer time as there are a lot of concerts, shows and performances happening.
One of the best ways to experience Amsterdam is to cruise its elaborate canal system, which is lined with those beautiful and iconic 17th century style houses. After our canal cruise we walked through the city passing by cafes, historic architecture, huge squares filled with people, and more bicycles than I could count. I quickly learned why Amsterdam has an “anything goes” reputation, as we made our way towards the Red Light District. Let’s just say that the city has a very liberal approach to sex and drugs. They even have a Blue Light District for those who are into more… let’s just say unique experiences. The thing I loved about Amsterdam the most was the easy-going attitude towards life everyone seemed to have. I really wish I had a little more insight to give on this city, which is one of the reasons my list of reasons I need to come back is so long. Amsterdam is an art lover’s paradise and visiting some of the many art museums is on my list.
I decided to go with the Hostel route when I stayed in Amsterdam and I was so happy with that decision. I travelled with three other girls and we stayed in a 6 bunk room, lucky for us we had it all to ourselves. The environment in Hans Brinker Hostel was awsome. They have a couple of really dope bar and undergound club, free wifi, large dining area, open smoking lounge, and free breakfast! The location isabsolutely perfect and was easily accessible by walk to city center. When we arrived we took the tram and it was only a short walk (5-10 mins) to get to the hostel. The best part was that the hostel was super clean and we felt safe.
I rented a car from Paris via Turo app for 3 days 200€ and took the five houre drive to Amsterdam. I was able to enjoy the entire city in 24 hours. With everything in walking distance, I started off with a bike ride to tour the city being that it’s bike capital of the world. My bike rental was from Yourcitybike for 9.95€, they open from 9am to 9pm. I wanted to feel apart like a local. There’s multiple canal cruises to choose from, I did the hour and a half evening cruise for 30€ it was worth it. Finish off the day at the red light district. The red light district is a must, very vibrant and a little something for everyone. Last but not least ended my day with some MannekenPis fries best fries in the world.
The only reason I didn’t give everything 5 stars is because Amsterdam is definitely not the place I’d choose based off affordability, history, and relaxation. It’s the infamous Amsterdam, so of course it’s a huge party city! Majority of my nights during my week stay here I didn’t go to sleep until after 5am because the locals can go all night. There was truly never a dull moment while here. It’s a city where anything goes to say the least. From the smoke shops at every corner, to people literally doing drugs in the middle of bars, Amsterdam was one heck of a good time. The Heineken factory is a must see, the museum of sex was very interesting, pass on the Icebar (exactly what it sounds like, a bar where everything is made of ice), and the canals are super romantic! 5 stars for party, things to do, and adventure.
My city break in Amsterdam was amazing and so far it has been my favourite place. We went out three nights in a row as there was plenty of places to go dance and have fun in the town center! We bought our tickets on Shoobs before traveling. We went to the club ABE, the Escape club and to a boat party for our last day, all organised by a British promoter who wanted to make sure he picked the best places for visitors. So far it was the place where I had to most fun and there are clubs for every music taste. I personally love afrobeat when I go out to dance and it is the place to go. People were very friendly and polite, my friend and I took the tramway to different places, it runs about every ten minutes and is very comfortable. I am planning to take my mom there in November for a relaxed holiday, loved it and highly recommend !
Amsterdam has become my new favorite place. It’s so relaxing and chill. I took a flight from London. It was about an hour. Took a train to the center of the city. The Heineken taste especially good from the pubs here. I didn’t know this is where it comes from. The architecture is amazing and all the people were nice. There are shops and stores at every turn. People do ride bikes all over and they ride pretty fast so beware. I took a ride on the canal it was about an hour long. That was awesome. I also did the smoke shops which was affordable and had many options. Went to the red light district which had sex shops all over. That was a sight to see. Went to the Ice bar which was also fun. It wasn’t extremely cold. But it’s definitely an experience.
What can we say about Amsterdam?! We went for the first time this past April and had a blast. There is so much to see and do. Immediately get yourself set up with a metro card. They can be purchased at the kiosks near any metro station. This will make getting around the city ten times easier. A great initial point of interest would be Amsterdam Central which is the hub of the city. From there you can easily find information, restaurants, gift shops, tours, etc. Depending on the duration of your stay, we suggest getting the I amsterdam City Card which is a pre-paid pass and discount card. Included you will receive free entry or a significant discount to the best attractions, museums, canal cruises, etc. It also gives you free access to use the public transport system in Amsterdam (GVB) such as buses, trams, ferry, and metro; no need to pay for a separate metro ticket with this pass. Read more information here: http://www.iamsterdam.com. Below is a comprehensive list of many of the things we did.
Keukenhof
We were fortunate enough to go in April when Keukenhof was still open. Keukenhof is known as the Garden of Europe and is one of the world’s largest flower gardens. The garden is only open from late March to Early May. It is one of the most beautiful sites you will ever see. It is less busy before 10:30 and after 16:00 (4:00 PM). The light of the morning and evening sun allows you to take wonderful photographs. It is also less busy on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday than on the other days of the week. You can either take a 40 min drive there or take one of the assigned buses from the designated pick-up location. Check out some of our tulip pictures here:

Heineken Experience
This attraction illustrates how a small Amsterdam brewery went on to become the world’s most notable beers. It provides a detailed walkthrough of the company’s humble beginnings as well as an education on its brewing process. The tour is self-guided, last about 1.5 hrs, and at the end, you get to enjoy two Heinekens at their onsite bar. Check out our pics below:

Biking
A trip to Amsterdam is not complete without biking through the city. There are almost twice as many bikes as people. Biking is one of Amsterdam’s most notable activities and forms of transportation. You will see bikes on the roads, metros, ferries, and even dedicated double-decker bike parking structures. We rented bikes for very cheap from A-Bike and rode through Vondelpark which was very scenic.
A’DAM Tower
A’DAM LOOKOUT is an observation deck with an unrivaled panoramic view of Amsterdam. Here you can get a 360-degree view of the city and take great pictures. We suggest taking the ferry from Amsterdam Central to Noord to get here. The ferries run every 15 minutes. There is also a restaurant/bar at the top of the tower where you can have a nice lunch/dinner. At night, it turns into a party venue. For our thrill-seekers, check out ‘Over the Edge’ which is Europe’s highest swing situated on the sky deck. You will swing 100 meters above the ground, back and forth over the edge of the tower with Amsterdam below your feet. The observation deck and swing are purchased separately. Check out our swing picture here:

Some other activities you can do are canal cruises, museums, and the red light district! Be on the lookout soon for our blog posts covering Amsterdam at http://www.weaventures.com.
There are quite a few things to do in Amsterdam, especially depending on the season.
In the spring, if you’re into flowers, a few miles outside of town you can visit Kuekenhof Gardens. They have thousands of beautiful tulips in gardens and fields. Provides great opportunities for some girly flower power photos. Even if flowers aren’t your thing, it’s worth a visit to see all the designs and try something new.
About 20 mins outside of town is Zaanse Schans Windmills. There are several cute windmills and a museum. This places gives off a traditional Holland experience. You could see the place in about 2hrs so it’s a nice quick trip to make.
In the City, Amsterdam offers several notable museums like Van Gogh and Anne Frank.
If you explore outside of the city center, going north, you’ll find the art district. It’s full of funky street are and alternative style restaurants. A perfect Sunday trip and if it’s warm enough you can get a drink on the man-made beach in the area.
I’ve been to Asmsterdam about 4/5 times, (I’m from london so it’s like an hour flight), Dam is one of my favourite places, it’s such a vibrant laid back place, everyone is super friendly, you can literally make friends everywhere you go, people travel from all over so you are likely to meet very diverse people.
The night life is fantastic, Melkweg is one of the best clubs, I’ve been in there a few times for concerts (future, drake, pnd, Tory lanez) all have had concerts here and the atmosphere is great.( only problem is it can be a little difficult to get into, large crowds a little bit of a wait).
The main square is alive at night(actually alive 24/7), good food, very cheap Everything! Lots of clubs, bars, coffee shops, music is good.(Bulldog!, Route 66! And Pancake Corner are a must ?)
I would advise stay close to the square that way you’re in the centre of it all, or you could jump on a train, explore a little, (you gotta grab and do it right!). Great Festivals during the summer!! (There is always something going on in Amsterdam). Even if you travel solo, you will feel safe.
Explore the red light district, museums and enjoy the city!
I’ve been to Amsterdam FIVE times and I would definitely go back again!
Firstly, I love the buzzing multicultural atmosphere everyone is friendly and all races and backgrounds are accepted. It’s a city that never sleeps and there’s always things to do both in the day and at night.
Like riding bikes? You might be in heaven because Amsterdam is nutritious for bike riding- it’s a way of life there! Bicycles get more respect than cars lol… Be careful not to get in the way of a cyclist!
Like museums and galleries? Perfect! Head over to the various museums such as van gogh, Heineken, Ann frank house and definitely the Rijksmuseum! You will learn a lot about history and Amsterdam.
I would recommend a boat ride through the canals. The scenery is lovely and they also have boats that include music and alcohol if you want more of a party vibe ! Like brunch? Then why not go to the Gs brunch boat party (tickets can be bought online)
If you like your ‘coffee’ then the bull dog is a MUST. Other cool coffee shops are grasshopper, happy feelings, grey area, barneys, Prix d’ami coffee shop has a cinema inside too!
Enjoy!
There’s many cities I love to visit, but there’s only a handful that I could actually imagine, packing up all my stuff and moving to.
Amsterdam is one of those cities that doesn’t really require an itinerary- just being there is fun enough. So I’ll simply leave you with some images and 5 must do’s.
1. Don’t just walk along the canal, get into a boat and get the full experience and views from the water.
2. Rent a bike, but only if you know what your’e doing. Cycling here is so much a way of life, I promise you it’s not like anywhere else. So I recommend for comfortable cyclists who can deal with cycling traffic, cars, pedestrians and trams.
3. Eat Surinamese food and Stroopwafels for dessert. The little island country of Suriname is a former Dutch colony- and due to movement of slave laborers across Dutch Colonies, Surinamese food is an interesting mix of Dutch, Indonesian, Indian, Chinese, African, and Caribbean influences. Some of the best Surinamese food can be found in Amsterdam. Once you’ve had your fill, try Stroopwafels- these chewy crispy waffles are a must and come with a variety of fillings- from Caramel to chocolate and more.
4. Coffee Shop visit: You know you wanna- so just do it. There’ll be no judgment here.
5. Take a Black Heritage tour yes, your heard me right. The city of Amsterdam is filled with Black History and the tour is so worth it’s weight in Gold.
I think it speaks for itself when visiting Amsterdam but I’ll give my review anyway. Well you have to try an edible or join from bulldog weed shop and a must to see the red light district at night. Best thing to do is to rent a bicycle, this city is a big bike life city so that’s best way to get around. For history the Anne Frank museum is a must see. This city is also big on fashion so you can find some good trendy clothing shops so I’d take advantage of that as well
I stayed at XO hotels park west in Amsterdam. I booked my reservation through travelocity at a good price when me and my friend went back in January 2019 to see the light festival. This hotel was a couple stops away from the airport and the train dropped us off RIGHT in front of the hotel. This hotel made it easy to go to other places and see the city because of how close it was to public transportation. I highly recommend staying here
There is a lot to do in Amsterdam. I went to the Ann Frank house where they told us how she lived and her history. I also went to the Amsterdam sign where tourist from all over come together to take pictures. In addition, my friends and I went on the Heineken experience tour which was very fun.
This place is one you won’t forget. From the ladies (red light district) to the weed at the numerous coffee shop to the river tours there is much to do
Amsterdam has the reputation of being a young, trendy, cosmopolitan and permissive city.
I like very much! It is a very beautiful city, dynamic and with good restaurants, many canals and bridges. Halfway between the big city and the village.
The different neighborhoods:
The Old Town of Amsterdam: Monuments of Gothic or classical architecture, mostly shopping streets and some museums
Red light district: Prostitutes in shop windows, bars and coffees shops
Plantage and Waterlooplein: Botanical Garden and Zoo, some museums
Canal District: Sumptuous Canals and a Romantic Ambience
Leidseplein: many clubs, bars and concert halls
Jordaan: Quiet area, charming for shopping, coffee shops and brown cafes
Museum District: The most famous museums
Pijp: Amsterdam’s most famous market, cafes, bars and restaurants
Where to brunch and eat in Amsterdam?
Super Brunch at Staring at Jacob
Great Indonesian restaurant: Kantjil & De Tijger
Nice restaurant in the neighborhood: Radijs
Where to sleep?
At Jan Van Riebeekstraat (found on AirBnB)
Amsterdam isn’t short of things to do. Having lived in NYC it reminded me of that busy style, hustle and bustle of tourist town, where you can get and do pretty much anything. If you are into History and Art, Van Gogh Museum, Rembrandt House Museum and Anne Frank House are a must. The thing I appreciated most was the transport system due to the ease of allowing you to do the things available. If you are only there for a couple days be sure to get GVB card. A travel card that gets you on and off most public transport set at a rate dependent on the number of days or hours you are there.
My favorite thing about my time in Amsterdam was actually getting out of city center and experiencing a bit more of the local life. If you get the chance spring time is the best. Holland in full bloom!
Amsterdam can be one of the most romantic places to travel with your life partner. It’s scenic walks at night as well as canal boat rides serves as an epitome to what a perfect romantic / adventurous getaway should look like. In Amsterdam there’s a healthy mixture of potential everlasting memories in every adventure. Some of my
Top recommended places are:
The ice bar
The Heineken experience
The canal tours
The ice skating rink
Ice skating on the frozen canals
The museum of prostitution
Dinner ? within the red light district area ? ( European food is always soo fresh and sooo good ??)
Literally one of my best trips! Amsterdam is an amazing city. I discovered so many things! It is impossible to get bored because there are always things to do and places to visit. The best time to go is late April until late July. The means of transport are regular and moving around the city as a tourist is easy.
While in Paris I flew to Amsterdam for the day. It was a pretty Chill city. Everyone one spoke English, which was definitely a bonus. During my brief time in Amsterdam, I spent majority of my time going to the Rijskmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank’s House. If you’re in to art and history I would recommend checking them out. And of course you can’t forget to go to the Red Light District. You have to visit during the evening because not much goes on during the day.
Amsterdam was a much chill spot. During my adventure I stayed at the Pig Hostel in the middle of the city I was able to walk everywhere. I did everything a tourist should do : The Prostitution Museum, Coffee shops ( there were so many) Bulldog was not all that it is hyped to be, Red Light District ( If you live or visit ATL the girls are not as bad! lol), Visit the Anne Frank Museum, Took tons of pictures , ate a the Hard Rock Cafe. I would suggest to stay in the city, take a picture near the Amsterdam sign before you leave the airport, and do a Canal Cruise!!!! I would indeed go back! If you have a long layover catch the train and explore, it is worth it! For more questions or concerns I don’t mind if you DM me @traveling_tenderoni on IG or even watch my Youtube video travelingtenderoni!
Amsterdam is an amazing and beautiful city it’s simple and exotic in its own unique way. With that being said I defiantly chose the wrong month to go I went in December and it was freezing cold. I stayed at the Amstel hotel. Most of the attractions are in walking distance and same area but because of the cold I used Uber to get around which added up very quickly. My hotel was very nice I splurged to get the largest room available about 190 a night but even by American standards it was still small to me if you have traveled abroad to Europen countries then you understand that hotel room size is not the same Amsterdam is no different. The red light district and Henekian Museum is a must see.
I love Europe especially Amsterdamn. I must say it is food, and transportation other than the train can be pretty expensive so I suggest you take the train everywhere. Besides the train lands right in the middle of city where all the museums, shopping , anne Frank house, restaurants are. My favorite part of the entire trip was visiting the red light district not only because prostitution Is legal but i wanted to see how they advertise it up close. The entire street is nothing but alcohol, bars where you can legally smoke marijuana and prostitutes. It was definitely a sight to see how excited the man were. You will be walking a lot so it’s best to bring good walking shoes or you can always rent a bike they have racks to rent everywhere. I’ve visited other place in Europe but i loved Amsterdam more
I went to Amsterdam and it was an amazing experience and lovely in the summer. My cousin and I chose to stay at the Holiday Inn where we each at our own suite that was about 10 mins away from the town. We booked everything our selves which worked out to about $200 per person for weekend. Amsterdam is definitely a nightlife oriented area. The Amsterdam canals are so beautiful and I’ve heard when it’s winter and the canal freezes over, people can ice skate on it. I would recommend the food because especially the famous French fries and the BEER! In addition, we got the full experience and took public transportation and rode bikes through the streets of Amsterdam. I would recommend going to the “coffee shop” for an experience i cannot add in this review. Have to see it and experience it to believe it. I felt very safe the entire time i was in Amsterdam. As for “travelling while black” i was the only black person along with my cousin I’m our area, but the people were nice. “Holiday Inn” was very nice & made us feel at home with no problems.
When people talk about Amsterdam, I’m sure you think of the usual things like the main square – Leidseplein – Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank’s House, the Red Light District, canals, Heineken, Vondelpark, cheese or tulips. There’s definitely more to do that will give you a different view of the busy city and from a new vista.
Try visiting Zaanse Schans which is with is in the neighbourhood of Zaaandam. It’s not far from Amsterdam city centre at only 20-30 minutes, so it can be done as a full or half-day trip. You’ll see a row of windmills and others dotted around, as well as shops, barns, workshops and a museum that hosts interactive chocolate making exhibitions. You can find out how they make chocolate as the area is home to the production and processing of chocolate.
You can also try getting high up in the city at the A’DAM Lookout. If you like a bit of excitement you can swing over the edge of its quirky building – and it’s random lift! It’s a 5 minute ferry ride (free) from Amsterdam’s Central Station. It’s also in the same place as Eye Film Museum so you can do the two at one time.
There’s a lot of hostel’s to say in if you’re on a budget – I stayed at Stayokay Vondelpark and it was easy to get to all the main parts of the city. If you have a bit more to spend, you can also try the NH – it’s a nice hotel not too far from Leidseplein.
If you’re looking for a good time to travel, I’d avoid early February and mid September as there are two industry trades shows taking place at that time – ISE and IBC. You may find accommodation prices higher than usual (aside from bank holidays) and they’ll also go quickly too. Plus everywhere may seem busier than usual as people from around the world descend on Amsterdam.
if you’re ever in Amsterdam and is want to go to a really good “Cafe” be sure to go to Green House Cafe in the Red Light District. Lots of celebrities visit this place to purchase marijuana, as it is legal in the Netherlands. They also have food and stuff here as well. However, if you’re looking for marijuana, anywhere in the Netherlands, ask for a Cafe. A Cafe and a Coffee Shop is not the same! Coffee shops sell Coffee, Cafe’s sells what most people really want… and Coffee lol.
Amsterdam is a very nice city, with great local transportation, sites and historical buildings. Some of the nicest European people in comparison to other larger countries. Laid back Norther European country, fairly affordable with a nice nightlife. A good amount of English speakers as well. Club scene is fair and usually something to do every day of the week. “Supper club” is the main club which is high end and you’d see the local Artists or Athletes, and boujee ladies hang out. My preference!
Amsterdam is unique.
Amsterdam’s canals are beautiful and seeing most people using bicycles as transportation is admirable.
From the end of March to May you should visit Keukenhof which are the biggest tulip gardens in all of Holland (it is inexplicable so much beauty).
Amsterdam has many activities for all kinds of people.
I will be back.
Amsterdam is stunning!! . in my 24 hours there we took a train to the city center area and then hopped on a sunset canal cruise which was about $15 euros pp. seeing the homes at night and the bridges light up was beautiful. After we looked up
Some coffee shops in the area for the experience ( when in Amsterdam right?) we met some cool
People there everyone is super chill
In Amsterdam and friendly .. we then walked over the the red light district at about 10pm which apparently is the time to go …. it was a fun experience with my husband.. live sex shows, women in windows, sex museums. To say the least we were entertained and shocked by it all… the surroundings are gorgeous. All the buildings and homes .. I would recommend people go for the experience.. we stayed out until about 2am walking around the streets eating random street foods like
Crepes and enjoyed our short time.
Amsterdam the city of freedom. Everyone is relaxed and friendly. We went there with friends, it is an excellent destination to spend a weekend with friends or even lovers. We stayed at EuroParcs Poort van Amsterdam, the hotel is 15 minutes from the center of Amsterdam by car. We visited the city by bike. I will definitely go back. Here are the things I could do during this weekend:
– Museumplein (with the I Amsterdram)
– Picnic at Vondelpark
– De Vallen: the neighborhood where prostitutes are seen in shop windows at night.
– Have a drink at Skylounge Amsterdam
– boat trip on the Amsterdam canal
– Coffee shop
Amsterdam is one of the coolest cities I’ve visited thus far. Access around the city downtown is pretty easy for walking and bikes. I wasn’t thoroughly impressed by Dutch cuisine, however, a lot of cafes/restaurants have pretty good breakfast menus, and good appetizers/starters.
I did a bike tour which is an awesome way to see the city in such a short period of time. I recommend Mike’s Bike Tours! I skipped the museums and opted for bike tours and canal tours which I very much enjoyed. Also enjoyed seeing so much diversity throughout the city.
If I visit again I will likely venture outside of Amsterdam.
Amsterdam surely surprised me.
I was expecting mostly white people but it there were so many other cultures there especially black people. Not only travelers but also local black people.
There’s a restaurant calle Moeders that was simply amazing.
It was hella cold when I went there in March so my friend and I bar hopped until we came to Moeders.
I had their vegetarian bowl filled with potatoes and veggies and it was delectable y’all!
Definitely check it out while you’re there.
You can also find cute bars in the city for smaller meals that are equally delicious.
Don’t sleep on Amsterdam!
I definitely would go back but in the summer or fall!
I might be the only negro to walk in Amsterdam and not smoke any marijuana. Lol. I enjoyed riding bicycle through the city. Me and my wife rode to the Heineken Experience to see how the beer is made. It was loads of fun and I learned a lot about making beer. I recommend this city for anyone who just wants to party and have a great time without the worries of laws.
I had The pleasure of traveling to Amsterdam in July 2018 a few months ago. I only Spent 2 days there but there is a lot anyone can get done in 2 days once u are up for it. The best part about Amsterdam is the famous redlight district if u have ever heard about it then u will experience exactly what they say it is. It’s INSANE!!! They come alive at night some during the day time but mostly at night. My fiancé and I had the pleasure of walking around looking at women dressed in their sexiest outfits in shop windows along the street of the red light district just waiting for someone anyone to pick one of them to have a good time (if u know what I mean) it was like nothing I’ve experienced before. We also went to something like a club where we watched a live sex show for like 3 euros I know it sounds crazy right. Amsterdam is magical and the food everywhere is amazing. If u ever visit please go to Mama Kelly Amsterdam it’s located inside of the stadium (it’s no longer the Olympic stadium as it has not been used in years) but it’s the most picturesque pink restaurant/cafe u will ever find. I had The best steak there! The ambiance was amazing and I had the Beautiful pictures there perfect for all the girly girls who want that perfect shot for their instagram while having the best time.
I will start by saying, I absolutely LOVE Amsterdam. It’s my favorite city – the local people are amazing and friendly, and there’s always something to do, Rain or Shine! and there’s a LOT of rain. You get used to it. Just bring a poncho – sounds crazy, but as many times as I’ve been, I will say if ever a time/place to wear a poncho: Amsterdam is it. That way you can keep walking/going about your day, with no interrupted plans if it rains.
I’ll quickly touch on some of the basics:
It’s pretty expensive to stay anywhere near the Center of the city – which is considered anything near Dam Square or Centraal Station. Depending on the month, I’ve seen upwards of like 300-400 a night. On my most recent trip (this past weekend), I stayed near Vondelpark (which is 20 mins from the center by tram, and walkable to the museum area) and paid 200 Euro a night for a 2 bedroom Airbnb, which I split (100 Euro/night) with a friend. Warning – most Airbnb’s will come with a TON of really narrow stairs and the rooms are often small and close together.
We flew for pretty cheap (150 each), direct from Naples, Italy, on a budget airline called Transavia. Wasn’t bad at all.
You can spend a lot in this city – things aren’t that expensive individually, but it can add up as you go. Fast food stuff like a Burger or fried rice stir fry from Wok to Walk can run you about 12-15 Euro a meal and sit down restaurants can be about 15-25 Euro a meal, depending on where you go. Then there’s entrances to museums, cost for boat rides, tours or activities, and SHOPPING. They have really great shopping. Most chain stores like H&M, Nike, Bershka, and Pull & Bear seem to send there trendy stuff to Amsterdam.
Traveling while black: It’s one of the best cities in Europe to do so, in my opinion. The city is diverse already – they say they have a population made up of at least some representation from every country in the world – and the Dutch attitude is super inclusive and down to earth. Most everyone I’ve met there has at least basic English, or better. Mostly better.
Things to do:
Canal Boat Tours – there’s one for everything you can think of: beer and wine, dinner, sunset, party boats, pizza and ice cream, even a boat for smoking (marijuana, of course)
Coffee Shop Tours – there are tour guides that actually take groups around to give you the run down on the weed culture – rules and informal rules, show you a few “coffee shops” to buy weed, and even show you how to roll/smoke it if you need that
Red Light District/Sex Shows – a cool experience, even just out of curiosity; you can go to the Sex Palace, which is like a Peep Show type of thing. You go in a booth, pay 2 Euro (then 1 Euro a minute after that) and a screen folds up to show you the stage. There can be a couple having sex or one person with a toy. There’s also Casa Rosso which is set up like a theater with a “variety show” – different people come out on stage and have their “act”
Windmills and Tulips – only about 30 mins outside of the city; you can pay for a half day/full day trip to go see the windmills and/or tulips(when in season from April through May). So much nature and beauty. Totally worth taking a bike tour and seeing it. Great photo ops!
Nightlife – a lot of people have written about this so I’ll stay short: Leidseplein is an area with a bunch of bars and clubs you can go in and out of. Good music – hip hop, pop, the usual. Red Light District has a bunch too.
Food – although I don’t like the “local” food too much, the restaurants (fast food, pizza, Italian, brunch) in Amsterdam are very good! I recommend:
G’s Spot (brunch)
New York Pizza
Vapiano’s (Italian)
Saul’s Burgers
Wok to Walk
The Breakfast Club
Staring at Jacob (brunch)
There’s no place like Amsterdam. The architecture. The history, the nightlife, the coffee shops. It has everything for everyone. The people are super friendly, and welcome everyone. Definitely take the time to visit the Ann Frank house, but book ahead! Take a dinner boat tour. It’s a great way to see the architecture. And definitely rent a bike for transport. The red light district is a great place for night life and cheap drinks. Be respectful of the prostitutes as they are making an honest living, *fun fact * prostitutes in Amsterdam have paid time off, health insurance, and child care benefits.
Amsterdam is full of things to do! The areas where there are a lot of things to do are called “pleins” (squares). Rembrandtplein has tons of clubs and restaurants, Damplein is the town square with royal palace and a popular meeting place, and the Museumplein is the museum district featuring the Van Gogh museum. Of course there’s also the Red Light District, with the museum of prostitution and live sex shows, and all of the famous “coffee shops.” You can also take tours on the canal and if you really want to feel like a local, make sure to rent a bike!
The city that never sleeps. From the canal boat tour to the sex museaums and all the coffee shops. You have to get ready to have a good time and live your best life while you’re visiting Amsterdam.
We met some amazing local people who took us on a day boat tour of Amsterdam. Most amazing experience and people. We visited the beaches which were consistently visited by the locals. What’s the point of travelling anywhere if you’re not going to interact with the locals right?
Weed may not be your thing but it’s definitely something to try when in Amsterdam. They have a whole different ranges and the sale representatives are always open to explain how all the different strains work, so do not be afraid to ask.
I was in awe of the prostitute and sex museaums there, definitely something that you wouldn’t see in your regular city. So take advantage of that and experience the museaums to learn more about this industry.
Redlight district is where you’ll have so much to see. Haven’t experienced any negativity travelling while black but there is definitely some people that are not so friendly everywhere you go in general, so don’t let this hold you back from visiting a place.
Enjoy Amsterdam!
My homegirl and I went for a weekend tript to Amsterdam. We got there by air from Stuttgart. Hotels in Amsterdam were quite expensive and we couldn’t get Airbnb too so we took an Airport hotel.. Parkplaza Amsterdam Airport which cost us for 3 nights+breakfast and free shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel 284€. I would advice booking hotels with the free shuttles as you can also hop on them to the airport then take a train from the airport to the city center which is like 6min and costs around 10€ round trip (ticket machines only accepted credit card for some reason, no cash)
The dutch are very friendly people who are always willing to help, my girl and I got stopped a couple of times and given compliments.. asked if we needed any help with directions etc. It’s good to not that the city is very international, almost everyone speaks english, everyone is chill and happy.. maybe due to the weed? 1st stop we found a coffeshop. We went to the coffeshop The Store near the main Station which had like a bar and a few block down the street it’s weed shop. You should note that weed and alcohol are not sold in the same shop. Once you get to the bar Coffeshop they will refer you to their weed branch where you get the good stuff.. weed and the cake then you can take it back with you to the bar and enjoy with some alcohol. Please if it’s your 1st time like it was ours listen to the advice you are given and take everything slow, don’t get carried away by the delicious cake or over do it by thinking that your body is too stronh for the weed effects cause once it kicks in it does hard, you don’t want to end up laughing and crying all afternoon in public like I did. Don’t mix weed with alcohol, dont smoke and eat cake at ago.. take your time with the cake. On the 2nd day we went to the red light street at night which is a must.. very interesting but I didn’t like it so much.. It’s best to go around midnight that’s when it’s extremly active.. shows cost between 5-50 euros depending on the length. We did the boat ride.. down the river which cost us like 15€ am not really sure as at that time I was experiencing weee effect.. it was beautiful though. Watch out the the bicycles as they are everywhere, we didn’t rent out any as we preferred tp walk and not worry about where to park the bikes incase we went in somewhere or what to do with them if we were not capable of riding them or worse forgot them. Weed cost 10€ a joint (some coffeshops tend to charge tourists 15-25€ though).. there alot of different varieties but we had one called amnesia?? you have the option of having with or without tobacco. Local food wasn’t so special.. they have waffles everywhere that are extremely delicious with Nutella, creams, fruits, chocolates etc.. in short calorie bomb.. we ate at the hotel which always cost us for a meal with wine around 70€. Amsterdam is a very expensive city though, taxis cost alot so if you have über it’s better as you will know what price to expect. Food, drinks are also expensive. The city is always alive though, even at 4:00 a.m people are still out in the streets and you feel safe. We went partying at club Abe and Club Nova which were good, the music, drinks in terms of price and the crowd. Other than the city being expensive it’s actually relaxed, fun and a must visit
Amsterdam is SUCH A COOL CITY! I visited for the second time a few weeks ago and fell in love. This is by far the most progressive city I have ever visited. Still in awe! From the legalization of marijuana and sex work to the eco friendly transportation… it’s a utopia.
We had a packed agenda of things to do during our three day trip! Here are my highlights.
1. Rent a bike! I almost felt left out on day one when we didn’t have bikes. Everyone bikes! The city is easy to get around, no need for ubers and there are bike routes throughout. Definitely a little nerve racking at first biking side by side with cars, but you’ll catch on quick. And the city is so pretty to site see from a bike.
2. Do a canal tour! There are SO many tours, and it may sounds touristy, but we had a great tour. The tour guide did not have a talk track, but let us just ride along and ask questions. Beer and wine included and they kept our cups filled. I thought the coolest thing was the House Boats. People actually live in boat homes along the canals. And they are beautiful, fully decorated, modern style homes.
3. Smoke! This felt weird at first, and I was nervous I would sound dumb asking what to order at the Coffeeshops, but the staff were always so friendly. I went to Barney’s and Grey Area. Barney’s was cool to sit in– it felt like an intimate bar and they curated the vibe well for the ‘experience’. Grey Area had an awesome design– the walls were fully covered in stickers. Not a lot of space to sit inside there, but no worries because you can just take a stroll and smoke.
4. Vondelpark! Gorgeous park with some historic sites and beautiful landscape. Good to go to just to enjoy the weather or to get a break from avoiding cars on the street and bike easy.
5. Red Light District! I almost did not go because I assumed this was not something that would amuse me. I thought the concept was very cool, but did not have particular interest in actually going. I have a friend that lives here though and he insisted I experience it– and I am glad he did! While everyone gets the gist, it is cool to see open, legal sex work in person. And I ended up being even more curious about how the transaction works, how it is regulated, how much is costs, etc. The idea of sex shows blew my mind, and made me feel like I’ve been stuck in a conservative bubble. While the area is 99% tourists, it’s worth a walk through!
Amsterdam is one of me and my girlfriend’s favorite place to visit. It isn’t romantic per se but the nightlife is totally different than any other city I’ve ever witnessed. For nightlife, I 100% recommend you visit the Red Light District. The RLD doesn’t get popping until 11pm so plan wisely. They have a ton of coffeeshops like Bulldogs or Greenhouse that sell weed (legally of course), Peep shows for 2 euros–which is basically a two minute sex show, which was pretty bad but worth the experience. They also have longer live sex shows that are 45 euros, we didn’t try that one out but there was a long line so I’m sure it was interesting.
All the people were very friendly and helpful as well.
I been to Amsterdam many times and of course I like this city, there is so many things to do at all time.
The nightlife is LIT you definitely need to discover the red lights district and walk around by night.
Amsterdam is definitely one of the most walkable city in Europe.
There are a couple museums to do, the Heineken museum, the cannabis museum and the Van Gogh museum. The Van Gogh museum is very nice to do when you are high ??. Such a nice experience.
During summer time from May until August Amsterdam has some nice music festival to do.
This year I did the Jamrock festival (Caribbean music and food) ❤️??? and it was amazing!!!
You have many types of festivals and different kind of music ?. Everybody can enjoy Amsterdam!!!
Yasmine.
Went to Amsterdam in March of 2017, KLM Airlines had a sale fare for $400 Roundtrip JFK to AMS. The Hotels in Amsterdam were a bit pricey, so I got a room in nearby Haarlem, Netherlands for just 50 Euros per night. Haarlem was a quick train ride into Amsterdam and it was VERY safe for myself and my friend who traveled with me.
Lots of affordable things to do in Amsterdam such as canal boat ride and hop on/hop off bus ride to tour the city. Visit to the Anne Frank House, Heineken Brewery, Gassand Diamonds and of course the infamous Red Light District.
If I had to choose any city in the world to live in for a year I would choose Amsterdam. This city is the best. It’s extremely easy to get around, everyone is so nice and trusting, and it’s all around a beautiful city. I did a walking tour with my sister and mom and learned about the history of the city and got some tips of places to eat and things to do. The tour was only 90 minutes and our guide was really cool and entertaining so I would highly recommend doing that while you’re there.
One of my favorite places to see were the canals and the houses in the Jordaan District. It’s a very pretty little neighborhood in Amsterdam. There are small shops and restaurants in the area as well. We stumbled upon a hole-in-the-wall pancake place that serves sweet and savory dishes that turned out to be amazing. It is called The Pancake Bakery. While you’re in Amsterdam you cannot miss the Van Gogh museum. There is a long line so you should go early to get your tickets. Start at the bottom of the museum and work your way to the top floor. In front of the the museum you’ll see the famous “I Amsterdam” letters and cute food trucks that serve the most delicious hot dogs. I am not a fan of hot dogs but these were exceptional.
To be honest, you can’t say you’ve really seen Amsterdam until you’ve walked through the Red Light District. The women do not appreciate any photography or filming and they will take your camera and destroy it if they see you trying to take pictures of them. I saw a few people get yelled at so don’t say you weren’t warned. During the day the district is just a regular street so you will have to leave this part of the tour until nighttime.
If you want to visit any cities outside Amsterdam, which I think you should because there are a lot of cool places to see, the train station is not to far from the city center (about a 10-15 min walk) and it’s very easy to figure out where to go.
I have to be honest when I say Amsterdam was not my favorite place I’ve ever been to. It’s actually one of the few places that I’ve been that didn’t WOW me. With that being said I was only in Amsterdam for about 14 hours. I had a stopover there through my airline KLM.
The people in Amsterdam are very kind. The vintage buildings and the history is very rich in culture. I did not get a chance to visit the Anne Frank museum but I heard it is very beautiful. The boat rides were pretty neat and I would totally recommend them just to get to know some of the history.
There are local tour guides everywhere with tourist activities. One that I would stay away from is the Ice Bar. It’s far out and there’s are much better things to spend your money on.
Everyone I know that has visited had a completely different experience than I did so please don’t let this post discourage from visiting.
This is my favourite city! There’s a lot to do in Amsterdam. You can go for many tours in various forms, eg:
boat hop on – hop off tour, bike city tour and the regular bus hop on – hop off. It’s not the cheapest country in Europe but I feel it’s very unique in its looks. There’s a number of Museums that are worth a visit such as the Von Gogh and Rijksmuseum to name a few. If you not into museums then you can go on a Heineken Experience tour, you get 2 beers as part of your package. There are events going on regularly in the city so it depends on what you are interested in. If you are in Amsterdam in August, there’s an Italian Food Festival on the 25 -26 August 2018 at Moermanskkade 71.
The people are great and this city has a lot of expats.
Visited Amsterdam this summer and it was an exciting trip. I just went for a day since I was actually staying in Rotterdam another beautiful city in the Netherlands. If visiting, try the hop on hop off with City Sightseeing. The have bus and river cruises. The Heineken Experience is also a must visit. You get two free beers after your tour. It was a really great experience. It rained alot while I was there so I didnt get the full experience but I sure would like to visit again
Amsterdam is exactly what you think it is, in terms of fun and adventure! During my stay there I was able to take a river cruise to view the entire city. I definitely recommend it! The company was the “lover’s cruise” but I went for the 4 course meal with unlimited drinks and didnt mind the other couples kissing under bridges. Also, as you already know the red light district is the place to go. Word of advice, do not take pictures of the ladies in the windows, it’s common sense but sometimes sense isnt so common. For the adventurous adults, they have live shows. I checked a very classy adult show in the district called Casa Rosso. Mark it off your bucket list.
Amsterdam is easily one of my favorite cities in the world. I stopped in Amsterdam for 2 days during a 4 country euro tour. We stayed in a hotel just outside of the city that had direct access to public transportation. There are so many things to do and scenic streets to walk in the city. If you are short on time I would highly recommend renting a bike to get around. I bike in almost every city I visit and Amsterdam most definitely has some of the best bike lanes I’ve ever cycled.
The city lights up at night. The streets become even cozier and there are plenty of bars to grab a drink and mingle with the locals. During my trip, I went to Cafe De Duviel which is a hip-hop bar near the city center. The bartenders were extremely friendly, the atmosphere was laidback, and most importantly the music was good.
Amsterdam has been one of my favorite destinations. I went with a group of 7 (all women). Amsterdam was one of our stops when we decided to visit Paris. In order to engulf in the full European experience we decided to stay at a hostel. Because it was so many of us, we actually all took up one room, so we didn’t have to share with any strangers. This saved us soooo much money. It was a room with 8 beds (all bunkbeds). It had one table in the room and trunks for everyone to leave their personal belongings. We all shared one bathroom (bring shower shoes!). The hostel we stayed at was connected to a restaurant/ bar. It was nice because we were always close to food and when the nightlife hit we were close to the bar. The beds were fairly comfortable, if you are a picky sleeper and need luxury, then stick to the hotels. The hostel was an experience, and it actually wasn’t bad at all. I’m not sure how it would be when you have to share the room with strangers though. I recommend it if you traveling with family or a group of friends who are very close.
Amsterdam was one of those cities that shocked me. I didn’t think I would like it but ended up loving it. I had the mindset because I’m not into a lot of the stuff it’s known for that I won’t have a good time. But that wasn’t the case at all and I wished I would have spent a longer time in Amsterdam. Serenity and excitement live together in Amsterdam. Some areas like red light district and the place around Dam Square are full of activity, action and night life. Rest of the city is quiet and calm, all during the day and night. Amsterdam Central is the main hub and you can get there in many ways via train, metro, taxis, bikes (which is the quintessential way of getting around in Amsterdam). Once you get to Amsterdam Central you can really get everything you look for in Amsterdam. Walking around and talking to people you really get a sense of understanding the city. There are free walking tour which is something I recommend. It covers good part of Amsterdam and it’s free. You can give any amount as tip as per your wish but you don’t have to. These guys are really good and try to make the tour as interesting as possible.
When in Amsterdam, a visit to Heineken Brewery is must whether you are a beer drinker or not. There are other tours that are great. Another one I would recommend is the canal tours. They take you around the city on a canal and the tour guide explains important/historical sites in Amsterdam. You just sit in the canal and relax as you enjoy the scenes of the places they take you. Windmills, wooden shoe factory and eating fresh fish in the fishing village is something not to be missed. The famous Coffee Houses entice lot of people but it wasn’t my thing. The RGV bus service is excellent and very puntual. The bus drivers are very courteous and try to help passengers with whatever questions they ask them.
I stayed at a hostel called Via Amsterdam. It’s reasonably priced, right by a train & metro station, about 15 minutes train ride from Amsterdam Central, and 20-25 minutes taxi ride from the airport for 60 euros. Very pricey but later we discovered there is a metro that takes you to the airport for 3 euros and it’s a 16 minutes ride. So definitely research and learn ways to get around. It’ll save you so much money because even though there are many ways to get around some are ridiculously pricey.
The only thing I struggled with or didn’t enjoy in Amsterdam was the food. There is no authentic Dutch food. Therefore you eat Chinese, Turkish, Argentinian, Middle Eastern, Thai, Mexican, Indian, and other ethnic food. Yes those food were good but I like eating the food of the places I’m at. I like that authenticity because it’s not everyday I can get something like that. I am very into food. Maybe that’s why this was struggle to not find an authentic Dutch food.
After spending 4 months in Europe and traveling to many cities I almost skipped Amsterdam. I’m so glad I didn’t, this is one of my favorite cities in Europe. I spent most of my time in the city center which is very easy to navigate. There are so many things to do like have a relaxing boat ride on the canals, art museums, lit nightlife, you name it Amsterdam delivers. The whole city issa vibe! One of their main attractions is of course marijuana, which is literally everywhere but it has so much more. The food here is also incredible, I had some of the best food in my life in Amsterdam. The only drawback to Amsterdam is the cost. Hostel prices are steep during the weekend and there are so many activities to do that the cost an add up. I would recommend staying in a hotel during the weekday. Overall I would go back to Amsterdam in a heartbeat I can’t wait for my next trip!
I traveled to Amsterdam in December 2016 for 3 days with my best friend and this was the most laid back city I’ve been to by far!! Many ppl think the atmosphere is due to marijuana (I’m sure that helps lol) but the ppl here are just easy going, honest folks. Most people here speak English so getting around was a breeze. People there were also very helpful when offering directions as we walked around town enjoying the sights and observing everyday Amsterdam life. We felt very safe, even when we went bar hopping around the Red Light District at 2am! Getting around the city is also very simple-Im from NY so having access to the train, taxis and the tram was like a gift from God lol-I felt at home although I was a foreigner in a new city. Everybody was upbeat and easygoing everywhere we went and the night life there was poppin! If you ever go to Amsterdam make sure you go to Supperclub, it was sooooo good! Although we were not the majority, NO ONE looked at us strange or as if we shouldn’t be there- it was all love and they definitely made sure we had a good time. I would definitely go back to Amsterdam, hopefully in the summer so that I can experience a boat ride thru the canals.
Amsterdam is an amazing city, with so much to see. As travelers with African passports (Kenyan), it can get be a bit different when it comes to visas and entry (once you do get the visa). Visas must be obtained prior to travel, and can take anything from 5 – 14 days depending on the African passport you hold and city you’re applying from.
Tip: make sure you have all the requested required documentation to make the visa application process easier/faster. On arrival, make sure you have your return ticket or onward travel ticket if you’re on transit and your hotel booking ready with you to present at passport control.
Once you’re in the country, Amsterdam is a cosmopolitan city with lots of people of colour (tourists and residents) so it’s safe and friendly.
Why not Amsterdam? I spent my Birthday weekend here after touring Europe and Amsterdam was my number 1 spot, as much as I wanted to visit a coffee shop I did everything else but that! I can’t even explain how amazing this city is, everyone was so nice, the food was AMAZING. Since this was my last stop I was running low on cash so I did a few free tours that worked off donations and I still had a good time. On my last day after so much walking and biking I took a mini nap on the lawn across the Rijksmuseum and the weather was really nice! I’m already planing to visit again soon
Amsterdam is one of my favorite places to go which I truly recommend, I like that when you come off the train you step right into the city center and if your like me, who likes to cycle you can rent a bike for 3,85 euros (OV fietst) for the whole day. One thing Amsterdam is known for is that where ever you go there is always something going on, either music playing, artists performing, fireworks, free samples etc. THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING which makes the city unique and fun.
And if you want to relax you can take a boat trip for 18 euros where you can take a one hour tour in Amsterdam canal admiring Amsterdam buildings and attractions. A truly awesome city!
Amsterdam is one of my favorite places to travel and I go there pretty often. I feel as an English speaking person you can’t find a more welcoming place in Europe! One of my favorite things to do in Amsterdam is ride bikes throughout the city. I love Vondelpark. There’s always something going on and it’s a great way to meet locals. If you’re interested in museums, the Anne Frank museum is by far one of the best museums I’ve ever been to. I cried like a baby there. I also loved the Moco Museuem which features the works of one of my favorite street artists, Banksy. If you go in the spring, visiting the tulip fields is an absolute must! It is called Lisse and it is about 30 minutes outside of the city.
Amsterdam is definitely my favourite European city by far! I love the diversity (which means I don’t stand out!). The city is steeped in history and there’s an array of entertainment and dining options – you’re never short of something to do. Take a ride along the river and visit the Sex Museum (among other things!). There are easy and affordable connections to other parts of the Netherlands so it may be worthwhile checking out a couple other places around the Netherlands if your trip allows.
Amsterdam in 3 days:
Amsterdam is one of the most liberal cities so of course there are many tourists there, unlike most parts of Europe it is way more diverse so less stares as a black person as we are used to so that’s a plus! We booked a free walking tour which was a nice experience as it didn’t just cover the expected red light district and sexual nature of Amsterdam but the history of the city and how it came to be what it is today. You can book this at http://www.neweuropetours.eu/amsterdam/en/home To experience a different side of Amsterdam you can take a Countryside Bicycle Tour which is 20 euros and takes you through the less hectic more quiet side of the city (PS: if you not into the tranquillity and nature vibes and not a fan of cycling maybe skip this). PS: the cyclists in Amsterdam are basically the cars so be aware at all times as you could easily get bumped by one or cursed out – the cursing part will almost definitely happen! But when you do the cycling tour you will understand why the cyclist get so impatient and angry. The Heineken museum is a nice experience as you know they are very proud of their Heineken beer, it costs around 18 euro and you get a full tour including 3 glasses of beer and some games, you can even personalise your own Heineken bottle with you name for 6 euros, that’s a nice souvenir P.S: pre-booking is essential to avoid long ques. If you into the arts of cause the Von Gogh museum is a must aswell. Don’t know if it’s every Sunday, but there is a market by the Rijks museum on Sunday where you can get some drinks and food and chill in the park with same mates (this is also where one of the famous “Iammsterdam” signs are #DoItForTheGram). P.S: There is another Iamamsterdam sign around the Centraal train station as the one by the Rijks museum is almost always full of people. Although you can literally walk anyway a weekend or 24 hour tram pass could be useful as they are everywhere. No need to buy it at the station as the tram drivers sell train tickets aswell (card only). Beware of picketers in the city as mentioned it is quite overpopulated so keep personal belongings safe. Of course the Red Lights District is a must, it’s much better at night and try check out the Blue Light District, won’t say how it differs from the Red Light District will leave that up to your eyes… P.S : No pictures allowed in the Red and Blue light district so don’t be THAT tourist please. If you want to go to a café to have a coffee with Mary Jane (see what I did there) there are numerous cafes , try to be careful and not go to just any café , try ask the locals, I went to the most famous café (it’s the oldest one in Amsterdam) called The Bulldog. And most importantly be free and open minded!
I traveled to Amsterdam via train from London’s Victoria station. The ride was quick, comfortable, and a bargain. I step off the train right into the beautiful city of Amsterdam. It’s take you back in time a bit. Walking along the canals, folks riding around on bicycles, the incredible homes, and you can’t forget the wonderful people. While visiting Amsterdam I stayed at the durty Nelly’s hostel. The location of the hostel was perfect. Near all the action in Amsterdam. I paid about 40 euros a night. The only negative about this hostel was that it was on top of bar. If your room was on the first floor of the hostel above the bar the music doesn’t stop until early morning. I highly recommend touring the heinken experience. If you enjoy beer you’ll love it.
What’s not to love about Amsterdam? Cosmopolitan, super chilled and very “hip hoppy” Its super easy to get around too. Train, tram, bus you take your pick. I regrettably gave the red light district a skip but be sure to check out the Shots Bar as well as The Bulldog for a super fun night out.
After staying in Amsterdam, it was truly named “Sin City” for me. I stayed in a Starwood chain hotel inside the airport and took the train everywhere. We visited the Anne Frank house, museums and the red lighting district. During my travel, I ran into Method Man, he was humble and cool. Come prepared to walk a lot and let your hair down. The city offers wonderful sight and if you priticipate in recreational smoking, it’s all there.
Who doesn’t love Amsterdam?! Diverse city with lots to do, from nightlife and coffee shops to museums. If you enjoy beer, try out the Heineken Experience which gives you a tour of the factory with drinks included. Go for a boat ride in the canal and more…this city is so vibrant and will not disappoint!
If you’re looking for the best hotel to stay in Amsterdam for location, cleanliness, friendly staff and is also chic, I recommend Amsterdam Park Hotel. Its 10 minute walking distance from the museum district, and across the street from a smaller shopping area and casinos. I just stayed there last December, and I will be staying again this upcoming July.
Amsterdam is very small, but rich with things to do. I visited during a “Non- traditional Backpacking” trip. Which is like backpacking, country hopping, purchasing flights and train tickets a day or two prior, but staying in hotels instead of hostels. I went in May and didn’t know a holiday was going so a lot of hotels were sold out and expensive. (Always check for holidays when traveling) Renting a bicycle to explore like the locals do is highly recommended. When you arrive you will see a ton of bikes on bike racks. Bicycles are life lol. I also took public transportation, as most people do not drive. It reminded of my teenage years going to school and getting around NYC but less crowded and cleaner. There are a lot of museums and shops to visit while there. In my opinion Amsterdam is moderately priced in conjunction with the U.S. A native popular dish to try is bitterballen, which isn’t bad with honey mustard haha. I am a foodie and try to try all native dishes when I travel. The people are very friendly. I was the only black person I saw when I was there and people were very welcoming. A fun activity is A’DAM lookout which is a big swing. An eroctic activity would be the visit their Sex Museum (the best I’ve ever been to across the world) and their Red Light District. The most famous coffee shop is The Bulldog. Not as many options as the West Coast of the U.S. and certainly not better to me. There are many bars along their strip. As I said it is small so something to do isn’t far! #AbVenturous
Pancakes are hugely popular in Amsterdam. Try a new trendy healthy pancakes joint called Mook.
There is a traditional pancake house called The Pancake Bakery.
I find Amsterdam to be a party city.
Hotel: Conservatorium ( Food is amazing) hotel is under 5 years old. One of the better hotels I’ve stayed in. Central located.
Things to do: Bankys exhibit . His work is pretty cool. You can find all of them at the museum
Cool to stroll the red light district and something different.
Places to eat: The Dutchess (in the W hotel)
Clubs : L lounge across from W hotel.
Amsterdam is more than a trip to the coffee shop. You have amazing museums like Rembrandt and van Gogh museum. Take the boat on the Canals. Eat poffertjes and go sit at one of the many terraces there is for a nice drink. If you like to party, Amsterdam is definitely the place to be. You can also take a train trip of 1 hour to Rotterdam City. A vibrant and modern city with an amazing night life. To have a full Dutch experience, visit Amsterdam during Kingsdag 27th of April. Everybody partying and wearing orange.
Amsterdam is always a great idea! It’s beautiful to say the least. the Coffee ships were as always lush!
The Museum Of sex, Van goh & the Canals oh as well as the red light district!
Get familiar with the bus system it will save you the heartache of getting lost like we did. Know that the trains and busses stop running after hours and taxi use this as leverage to hike up the cost during these hours.
A special destination with great energy and even greater people, getting there I was taken back by how diverse this beautiful Dutch city/country was. Every culture/race is very well represented in their population. In my opinion Amsterdam is the ultimate guy/ gal trip if you are looking to have a good time, doesn’t matter the kind of fun you are into this place has it.
During the day check out the beautiful architecture throughout the city, see how well they have been able to maintain those structures for hundreds of years. Rent a bike for around $9 USD a day at Starbike rentals and get around the city like a local. Either take a gamble on food inside one of their upscale restaurants or check out one of the street vendors serving pizza, fries, kabobs; you cannot go wrong either way. Museums are a must and they are everywhere for every interest from the Museum Of Sex to the famous Van Gogh Museum. Once night hits grab a weed joint (if that is your thing) from one of the cafes, which are on every other corner and go where the night takes you. Weed is legal in Amsterdam so do not worry about getting in to any trouble. One of the most popular cafes there is Bulldog Cafe, a chill spot with a large array of weed, beers and edibles. If you want to dance and meet, people hit up club Bitterzoet. This place stays packed; you will definitely have a great night. If you want to experience something that you have never witnessed, then check out The Red Light District. Trust me. I cannot explain this area, it is just a place you need to visit and see for yourself. I love Amsterdam and I know you will too.
Amsterdam was beautiful to say the least. I found it quite expensive in my opinion yet it was lots of fun. Obviously coffee shops are the norm to go to hahaha. I went to mostly all the museums Van Gough, Diamond, and even the Heineken Experience was so much fun. I did stay in Hotel Vondel which was a few blocks from the museums. My favorite spot to eat was omelegg food was so bomb. I would suggest changing your food to Euros before hand and bring plenty.
Amsterdam has so many adventures to explore in this beautiful city ! Great for family’s and young people! If your into history take a cancel ride and see all the beautiful sightseeing of the canal ways. Go to Anna Franks house it’s quite the experience. Make sure you buy tickets online on the Anna Frank website months in advance. You could be stuck in a line for more then 2 hours and not even get It! If your here with friends, get lose and smoke a blunt or take a tuffle and go down to the red district! In the windows you’ll find sex workers half naked and advising themselves. You’ll also find peep shows and sex museums in the red light district. Amsterdam has a variety of international foods and know for sweets! If you want the best apple pie in the world go to Winkel !!
Amsterdam….!!!! is party city, party party and more party. the legal age to drink beer is 16, weed is legal, sex with prostitutes is legal everything is legal. if you ever wanted to do any of these things amsterdam is your city. now on a serious note if you want to know about history Amsterdam is also the place to go to you can visit the Anne Frank museum it has so much history and beauty. you can walk the streets and be amazed of everything it has to offer. The Van Gogh Museum is also located in Amsterdam try to enjoy it take your time in these museums they have so much to teach us. If you like me and you like the adventure rent a bike and bike everywhere its a amazing workout and it takes you to places don’t forget to visit THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT (you can’t take pictures of the women sorry) . You can also take a train ride to Haarlem its a city outside of amsterdam. True fact: amsterdam is so small you can go around in a bike.
Amsterdam is more than weed and spacecakes. If you go in the summer take a hour train ride from Central Station to Den Haag/The Hague lots of stores and then a 20 minute bus to Scheveningen beach. It’s a day trip Trust me it’s really easy. You can also hit Rotterdam as well In Amsterdam you can rent a bike and travel throughout the city get a three day bus pass and hop on and off the buses and you buy the passes on the bus. Mr Porters really good food $$$$ or try Sama Sebo if you are really hungry
Amsterdam was an amazing experience from the Nightlife in the Red Light District, the Rijks Museum, the Amsterdam Sign, The Amsterdam Icebar, the food, etc. I would definitely visit back.
The city of freedom! There is ALWAYS something to do in Amsterdam. Even if you go and have no idea what to do or see first, you will find something.
Both times I’ve been have been in winter with the weather freezing cold but that couldn’t stop me having fun. The night life is ripe in Amsterdam with so many bars to bar hop and end up in a club. I went to Melkweg to celebrate my birthday and it didn’t disappoint! If you’re more of a chilled tourist type there loads of places to visit such as the Van Gogh museum. The Anne Frank museum and the Sex Museum! Amsterdam has its fair share of museums and history to unfold so while you’re out there exploring the red light district be sure to hit up some of the museums too!
The best place for night life is in Leidseplein and they of course have an array of restaurants and junk food for you to choose from at your dispense! The nutella bakery is a must go.
Party! Party! Party!
I can’t say enough about how good of a time I had in Amsterdam. Stayed in an Airbnb right outside of the main area of the city and it was great. Walkable to everything you want to see and experience. There was no need to even visit the red light district because there were plenty of fun bars and clubs all around.
And if you’re not the partying type, there are plenty of great museums and other pieces of culture. Explore Amsterdam and fall in love with it.
Amsterdam should be on everyone’s Travel-Bucket-List.
You should definitely visit 11th Floor of the SkyLounge at Double Tree by Hilton (right at Amsterdam Centraal). The view that you get is more than amazing.
There are so many activities you can do.
Taking a bike tour around town and discovering all those charming canals.
Hoping on those boat-tours throughout the whole city and have a Heineken.
The “I am Amsterdam” signe is a great fotospot you shouldn’t miss.
If you are interested in history the Anne Frank House is a must.
Amsterdam is great and has something to discover for everyone.
With only a weekend in Amsterdam, we had a fun activity each day. Upon arrival we easily found an area to bar hop. During the day we took a walk against the canals. Easily tourists can hop on cruise tours or rent bikes for a low price if interested. Of course we visited the iamsterdam sign in the plaza and it was super busy. Visit during the less busy parts of the day if possible and if you don’t want to visit the main sign, there is another so you can actually get a shot by youurself or with just your friends and family.
Amsterdam is an amazing place filled with tons of accommodation. I stayed at HotelNotHotel, which was conveniently located in a more residential area. The hotel was like staying in an art exhibit! They have a selection of “hidden rooms” which have bookcases as doors, as well as a tram cart as a room and a bar called Kevin Bacon. The bar served Thai food and great cocktails! I definitely recommend staying here for any trip to Amsterdam.
There is so much going on in Amsterdam! I was here for a weekend and wish I had more time. The highlights of my trip were the Van Gogh Museuem and the Anne Frank House. There were tons of canal tours, the Ice Bar was cool, cafes (if that’s your thing), nice shopping areas, and you can’t forget about the Red Light District! It was definitely a place you can’t write home to mom about, unless mom is CoolAF. It was easy getting around as well. It’s definitely a biking city so many of the hotels and hostels provided them and the train was also very easy to use. All in all, I had a great time exploring Amsterdam and would return!
What happens in Amsterdam stays in Amsterdam!!!
I loved this city ,we stayed at the fabulous Volkshotel!! There is a club, a bar/chill out place, activities and everything for fun!!! We booked a river tour with the hotel which was informative, relaxing and we got to bring our own bottle of wine to drink so it was a plus for us!! We also made friends with other persons staying at the hotel! And who goes the Amsterdam and not visit the Red light district ?! Yes it is all the naughtiness you heard and read about!!! Ladies in glass windows, live sex shows, stripclubs and coffee shops that are not coffee shops! (Weed shops). We also visited the ice bar the experience was on of my favorites although we won’t able to stand the fully time we paid for !! It was so blasted cold !! Entrance for included a drink before we go into the icebar and two more inside plus pictures! Well worth the price!!! Inside there is music not that I could of danced lol and some pretty cool sculptures!!! Oh and for a breathtaking view of the city and drinks go to SKYLOUNGE AMSTERDAM!!
