Our weeklong stay on Dauphin Island from July 18th to 25th was everything a beach vacation should be—relaxing, sunny, and filled with family memories.
We stayed at Family Tides beach house, which was perfect for our extended family. The house was comfortable, well-equipped, and just a short walk from the beach. Mornings started with ocean breezes, and evenings ended with sunsets that looked like paintings. The weather was consistently beautiful—hot, of course, but perfect for swimming and lounging.
The people on the island were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which added to the laid-back, small-town charm Dauphin Island is known for. The beach itself was never overcrowded, and we loved having the space to stretch out and enjoy the waves.
We explored Fort Gaines, which offered a fascinating look at history with stunning views of the Gulf. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab was a big hit, especially for the kids—educational but hands-on and fun. Midweek, we took a trip over to Gulf Shores for a little change of pace and more activity.
Food was a big part of the trip, and the island didn’t disappoint. The Lighthouse Bakery was a favorite—we went more than once for breakfast pastries and coffee. The Islander served up fresh, satisfying seafood, while Pirate’s Bar & Grill, Dockside, and The Hangout in Gulf Shores all delivered great meals with a casual, beachy vibe. Zeke’s was a standout—fresh fish, excellent service, and a lovely waterfront setting.
All in all, Dauphin Island is a hidden gem. It’s peaceful, family-friendly, and still feels like an escape. If you’re looking for a low-key beach getaway without the chaos of over-tourism, this is the place. We’d absolutely go back.
