Georgetown is one of my favorite places to get away to. The air is fresh, all the food is organic, and there plenty of coconut water and mangos. I visited twice in the last three years and every time is better than the last. In 2018 the had the first Guyana carnival and it was a time! Plenty of events to attend, people from all over the Caribbean migrated to the Georgetown for this once a year event. Carnival is always around the counties independence day which is May 26. The dates are may 17-27 for the most part. I did not play mas, but I attended all the events in which price ranged from 25 USD to 125 USD. All the big soca artist and DJs were in the country for the grand event. One of the main reason I love this place so much is the food! It is always fresh and the portion size is large. The people are receptive and helpful always willing to feed you. Although the country isn’t a major tourist destination as yet, keep an eye out for this up and come country. Flights are usually between 6 and 7 hundred if booked in advance. The exchange rate is around 200:1. Most of the country is forest land and attracts bird watchers and others interested in nature. If going for the first time, I would suggest going while an event or holiday is going on. They are no shortage of either so anytime is great!
Of course I had to visit Guyana because it’s where my family is from. If you love west indian food then this is the place you need to go. I loved Guyana because the food here was so delicious. So forget about that diet and eat up. It is kind of expensive. Last time I’ve been there the currency exchange rate from USD to Guyanses dollar was $1:$200. So just bring a lot of money. There’s not a lot to do and isn’t a really touristy country but one place to visit is Kaiteur Falls. It’s a great big water fall which Guyana is known for. It is a little pricey to visit because you have to take a plane there. But it is worth the visit.
