Went here in 2021 and was happy to be greeted by many BLM signs in yards and establishments. This is an artsy, hippie like town that, while not very diverse BIPOC wise, has friendly locals who are made up of transplants from the cities. People are friendly and I don’t recall many stares and had no weird or racist encounters. We actually had nice conversations with strangers.
Beautiful little town with good food and fresh lake fish.

Traveling While Black
I stayed at the Grand Marias RV Park. The views of Lake Superior were epic. I had no negative experiences. Because the town’s proximity to the Canadian border, some local residents work for US border patrol. The one I encountered didn’t questioned me and even waved. The town is progressive though it lacks diversity. I’ve never felt like “home” in a place. But it felt like home. An expensive home (in an expensive town) but I’m going to make that area my home. I spent a lot of time at the Folk School in town. They hold classes and community events.
