Decided to take our family trip this year to Kansas City. My family moved there a couple of months ago. Definitely a different experience from Memphis. It was very peaceful. Really enjoyed the scenery. I am one who frequents thrift stores and found some really great ones. I am just going to be honest here…..no gunshots was a different experience for me. People enjoying themselves and laughing. It was a wake up call that every city is not the same. And yes, I think marijuana is legal. Dude was literally smoking on the way into the thrift store. It threw me for a loop. Just something I’m not used to but whatever. Family had a great time. Airbnb was hunted but other than that, we came out unscathed. Definitely would recommend a couple of night stays.
Must have the brunch at Urban Restaurant on Troost. Good food, music and vibes.
There’s a strong Black entrepreneurship scene here, check out Black Owned KC website and KC Porterhouse Retail Incubator for businesses to explore.
If you are going to stop in kansas city please make Distrikt Biscuits one of your reasons to get a bite in the city. Their chicken is fantastic, they have great service, BLACK OWNED, THE BISCUITS WERE THE BEST THING SINCE YA GRANDMA PUT HER FOOT IN IT. These guys made me feel at home and served some amazing eats.
Kansas City was never on my bucket list but I certainly had a time! We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott downtown and while it did seem like big city living, it still felt hometown. The reason for the trip was to visit the National Negro Leagues Museum. 10 of 10 experience. Who knew learning history on vacation would be that entertaining. The College Basketball Experience is a must see! There are so many interactive games in there you could stay all day. Burnt ends at Arthur Bryant’s BBQ were fantastic and so was the Red Chile Turtle Posole at Lula Southern Cookhouse. Nightlife was relaxed but super fun. We definitely felt comfortable walking around downtown as a Black family.
Kansas City wasn’t one of the places I had on my bucket list. But I was surprised by how developer and beautiful the city is. The chiefs are a big deal out there as expected and if
You stay downtown you will see a lot of
Billboards. I recommend visiting any bbq spots while there joes Kansas is a gas station and
Place to get ribs! Also If you’re up for the drive it’s about 45 minutes to KU home of the Jayhawks! There is definitely culture there and it felt safe as a black person

Kansas City is a wonderful, affordable place to visit! Check it out for the museums, BBQ, and Ruby Jean’s Juicery a black owned juice spot with a fantastic back story- I was only in town for 4 days and went out of my way to support the visit and enjoy their delectable food every day! From the avocado toast to the blackened salmon salad everything I enjoyed there was SUPERB. Can’t wait to return
