    Traveling While Black

Lived in Johor Baru, Iskandar Puteri, Malaysia (near Singapore border) for two years. In a nutshell: West Malaysia is very much an Islamic nation (rather that’s a good or bad is up to you personally); there are three main ethnic groups -Malay, Chinese, and Indian, but unfortunately the groups mostly do not mix. So Malaysia is a pot with lots of identities, but I wouldn’t say it’s a melting pot. Religion, language, unfair laws based on ethnicity, and social status keeps these groups very separate. However, you won’t stay out as a black person -no one is asking to take a picture with you just because you’re black lol.
