Visited the Azores (Sao Miguel Island) recently and was pleasantly surprised with how kind and welcoming the people were. The Azores are a small group of islands that are a part of Portugal, about a 2.5 hour flight from Lisbon. As a Black traveler, sometimes I am hesitant to visit places that are not well visited by the Black community but I felt safe and had a very enjoyable stay. Some of the activities that we enjoyed were whale watching, a 4×4 quad tour through the island and into the mountains, thermal pools (you can go at night!), and Botanical Garden. Pro tip: Rent a car if you don’t mind driving as they do not use Uber or any equivalent on the island. This will give you a lot of flexibility. The company that we used for the 4×4 quad trip was called https://azoresoutdooractivities.com/.
I took a flight from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada( 70 USD) Airport which is the largest island of AZORES.
I recommend 4 to 5 days for you to know since there is not much accessibility between tourist places.
Thin ponta is adventure, beaches, nature and relaxation.
to be perfect your stay visit:
POÇA DA DONA BEIJA,
LAGOA DO FOGO,
LAGOA DAS SETE CIDADES,
SEE DOLPHINS AND WHALES,
ILHEU DE VILA FRANCA DO CAMPO
enjoy.
Ponta Delgada is a beautiful city. And the island of Azores has so much to explore. You must visit the three arches which was the gateway to the old city. And at night there’s a night light district but it’s not open in the winter which is unfortunate because it’s beautiful. One thing I loved about Ponta Delgada is that they drive on the same side of the street as we do in the USA which made it very convenient to get a rental car and explore the island. There’s so much to see outside of the City Center so if you don’t get a car be sure to at least explore with a tour guide. There are tremendous mountainous views and even volcanoes on the country side. My biggest pet peeve was the narrow roads, but you get used to it after a while…. kind of. If you love food be sure to try the local sea food it’s always fresh and great portions. There’s a saying in portion the smaller the restaurant, the better the food. They have a special dish called Bacalau which is very hearty, similar to a salmon cake in taste in my opinion but much bigger and way more filing. I loved the atmosphere at night along the ocean. It’s not very lively unless it’s a Friday or Saturday night, but it’s definitely a very relaxing and romantic city. Tons of restaurants in Ponta Delgada as well most of them specialize in Beef dishes but it’s great. There wasn’t one place I went that didn’t have great food and I am an ultimate foodie plus the people are very kind. I’m definitely glad to say that I’ve bee to Ponta Delgada, Portugal.
