I currently reside in Catania, so there are definitely a lot of pros and cons. Catania is extremely affordable. You can easily have a traditional Sicilian dinner with wine and beer for 30 euros for 2 people. You can get the full experience of Catania in just 2 days. Day trips to Taormina and Syracuse are strongly recommended. A car would be the most affordable mode of transportation, however driving in Sicily is an experience in itself.
Sicily Taormina Italy
Now this is still my favorite place I’ve ever visited. What you would do is take a bus or the train from central Catania which is about $5-$30 depending on if you take the bus or train it’s about 45 min ride from Sicily and once you get there I suggest spending at least 2 days there because the town has a lot for you to do where you could visit cathedrals to the old theatre built of stone enjoy some good eats and if you can get a hotel up top and enjoy the view down below. If not just go inside the hotel and have a drink on the balcony which has an amazing view of the ocean down below. Now the beach down below you can take a a bus down or take a trolley both about 5 euro. The beaches here are of stone so the water shines off these stones giving it hi defined colors with crystal clear waters it’s just a great atmosphere. You can also swim or walk down to the cave and take some nice pics. Overall you won’t be disappointed
Getting to Catania is simple and easy from any city. Flying into Catania–Fontanarossa Airport is affordable and available from most airports. Catania is a beautiful city full of architecture and places to enjoy great eats and drinks. The locals are extremely friendly and helpful even when you do not speak any Italian. With lots of sites to see, Catania has great local restaurants and great gelato. If you love sea food, there is an array of fresh seafood restaurants to enjoy.
If you like hiking, Catania is at the bottom of Mt. Etna and hiking mount Etna is definitely adventurous.
The most cost effective way to see the sights is by renting a car. If you enjoy wine tasting and cooking; there are great wine tasting tours and Sicilian cooking classes to enjoy. The city of Taormina is about 45 minutes drive from Catania and great for sight seeing nearby cities and learning more about Silcily’s history, traditions and cultures.
