Elkton is very close to the popular Massanutten Resort, but there’s not a ton to do in town. I live nearby and was surprised to see that Tugaloo College listed it as a possible previous sundown town—due to sharp declines in the black population between 1940 and 1970 (from 12 people to 0 people). The town is still predominantly white. In 2018 someone used a Jewish slur at an Elkton town council meeting.
If you’re visiting the area for Massanutten Resort, I would recommend skipping Elkton and traveling to one of the other, larger towns nearby (Harrisonburg or Staunton) if you want a “small-town America” feel.
