Franceville is the third largest city in Haut Ogooue Province, Gabon, a wild tropical country located in Central Africa.
The city is accessible either by plane (1hour) or by train (10-12hours) from the capital city, Libreville. We had decided to go there by train, a very long trip but when we finally got to Franceville, we definitely forgot how exhausting the trip was,as soon as we got to breathe fresh air, admire the vast expanses of savannah and virgin forest. All devoid of any tourist affluence, one would think oneself alone in the world! Haut Ogooue province has many tourism spots, (preserved national parks, canyon of Leconi and many more) but while in the city of Franceville, you cannot miss a visit to Poubara and its liana bridge.
When you get there, the decor surprises a bit; tradition and modernity rub shoulders, but the vision on the hydraulic station spoils the landscape a little.Do not expect to find a huge site that would require a day visit: the liana bridge is emblematic of Haut-Ogooué, but the site itself is visited quite quickly.
After a walk of 30 minutes in the forest, you can admire the Poubara Falls, upstream of the bridge that must be crossed. You can also plan a picnic further down the edge of the Ogooué river, (mother river of Gabon) or simply refresh yourself at the tourist chalet.
It’s worth to give it a try if you stop by Gabon some day.
