    Traveling While Black

Hi y’all! My husband and I are traveling the world! We are currently staying in Merida, Mexico for 6 months. We’ve been here for a month so far and we truly love it! It has been very safe for us to just be ourselves. I am Afro-Dominican and my husband is Biracial (Black American and Caucasian). Spanish is my native language so I do believe that has been extremely helpful in our traveling. So as long as you know some Spanish and can work the translation app you’re good! The youth also tends to know some English. Adapting to life here has been easy and the slow living we’ve been craving for. We’ve been to the city of Chelem to enjoy the beaches there and it was extremely relaxing. So please don’t hesitate to explore this beautiful, welcoming city and always tip well! The services you get truly go above and beyond for you. We’re both 29, child-free, and self-sustaining financially; anyone with remote work, disability, retirement, or savings can easily live here comfortably, as it is affordable. The food, the people, and the culture can’t be beat. Come check it out for yourselves. Peace ✌🏾

I can’t say enough about the beauty of Mérida, Yucatán. I went for the Flamingos but am not a tourist so I hired my a local driver who was my guide while here.

The tours they recommend are from 8-5 and like I said I’m not a tourist so being stranded for those many hours was not me. I’m glad I hired him. The tours geared towards flamingos say you will see them but if you are going to view them in June you may not be able to view them because during the summer months they are mating and hatching.

It gets pretty hot here up to 112 degrees so please bring plenty of water and stay hydrated. Evenings are when most people come out to enjoy dinner and other activities.

Visit restaurant row there called Calle 47 which is their Gastronomic Corridor and the surrounding ruins of Chechen Itzá, Uxmal, Izamal the yellow city and Dzibilchaltún.

When at Chechen Itza go to the local buffet restaurant there called Se beh in Pisté.

Safe while traveling black and the people were quite lovely I felt safe very safe. Spanish speaking will help you in the day to maneuvering about the city, as not everyone speaks English.

Some level of racism from the local population as some stared fairly often. Overall most were helpful to help especially with the language barrier. Other black people visiting were very warm and exciting to greet. Fruits and vegetables were great with few preservatives. Foodies will be pleasantly surprised by small, independent eateries with flavorful menu items. Meals are inexpensive/cheap away from centro. Accommodation prices are medium-low to high-average. A lot of options for transportation is available. Uber is available. There’s a growing black expat community. The weather is extremely hot most of the year so most social activities take place after sunset. A lot of ancient artifact monuments. Water holes (cenotes) are popular but most are privately-owned which can be an issue with proper land maintenance.

Check out Flamante Burgers. Even if you’re vegetarian like me. (The Aguacate Veggie Burger is pictured).

Progreso Beach is a short drive away and it’s excellent for a relaxing walk in the beach.

Nice weather, friendly people and safe surroundings.

It’s one of the places I’ve enjoyed the most in Mexico.

Merida, Yucatan is such a beautiful and enchanting location. Mayan culture, Mexican vibes, world-class cuisine, with something to do every night! This place has quickly become a second home for me and a main home base for many others. Merida is safe and affordable. It is also very close to the beaches of Progreso and only a few hours away from Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen. New world living with Old world charm!
