Being a solo black woman in India wasn’t as bad as I anticipated. I got stared at everywhere I went but I never felt like I was in danger. Even tho I felt safe where I was, many locals (both male and female) advised against exploring the rest of India on my own for my safety.
Mumbai, formerly called Bombay is the bustling capital of India. My trip to India was in 2007 and I am sure that much has changed in the time that has passed. I was a teen when we did this family trip to India, however, it’s a trip that I will never forget .
The first thing you notice when you land in India is the humidity. The heat hits you flat in the face as you step out of the airport. Traffic in India is horrific. It is the only place where you will see a truck,car,bus,taxi,scooter,ox-cart and tuk-tuk all on the same road. There are no lanes of traffic and things are just chaos, but you just have to go with it.
I would advise doing a walking tour of the markets and places in Mumbai. Street food always smells and looks delicious and you can find the real taste of Mumbai on the streets. The Gateway of India and elephant Caves is also a great stop and I would advise visiting these places. There is a lot of walking involved so bear this in mind and be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
The hustle and bustle of Mumbai leaves little room for romance, however, I am sure that you could book a luxury hotel if that is what you are after.
However, overall Mumbai is definitely a place to explore the tastes and sights of Mumbai.
