My very first destination as a Black, female SOLO traveler was to the islands of Tahiti. I hopped to four Islands Tahiti, Moorea, Taha’a and Bora Bora. While all four were beyond beautiful, the island of Taha’a is breathtaking and left me speechless. Do you remember watching Fantasy Island as a kid? This was pure fantasy Island luxury. I stayed at Le Taha’a Island Resort & Spa in an overwater bungalow facing the island of Bora Bora. Getting out of my private boat transfer to be met by a fully tattooed Tahitian man on a ukulele and the welcome concierge was just the beginning. Check in was personalized, intimate and nothing like standing in line like at a regular hotel. I could go on about my gorgeous bungalow in the beauty of carved Tahitian wood, but I would like to mention a must do excursion. The island of Taha’a produces the rarest Tahitian vanilla and black pearls in the world. And you can’t pick these up at a random jewelry store in the United States. In a fun 4 x 4, with others, I went to a black Pearl farm to see how they are harvested and created into jewelry. From there, we went to a vanilla farm where one of the growers sat us down and explained to us the history of the Tahitian vanilla. The area permeated with the smell of delicious vanilla, like there were baked goods nearby. Yes, I bought a beautiful bracelet with a black pearl, pure vanilla bean pods, vanilla powder, and vanilla extract. Who knows when I’ll be back right? Next was to a rum distillery made and produced by a Tahitian owned company. As a middle aged Black woman on her own, I was concerned about how I would be treated, but there was no concern to be had. Every person truly treated me like a queen and was elated that I would come visit their part of the world! By the way, the ones who live in the mountains look more like us. What a surprise! While the French Polynesian islands are not in anyway cheap, it is a true cultural experience, whether solo or coupled up.
Tahiti is the most beautiful place, but honestly, I’m not a fan. The food wasn’t my cup of tea, and the hotels are super overpriced. We took a family trip back in September and stayed at the Hilton. They have nightly parties and events at the hotel which was pretty entertaining. Make friends with somebody at the front desk because they have drink coupons! The Fa’aruma’i waterfall is gorgeous. It’s a short walk to the waterfall which is also green and beautiful. Great for photo ops. But my favorite was feeding the stingrays in Mo’orea. The boat ride was like $70 roundtrip. Definitely worth it. If you like rest and relaxation, Tahiti is the spot.
Tahiti still has my heart. We stayed at the intercontinental tahiti resort and we had a beautiful hut on the beach. We went in February which was off season so we got our huts for about $500 a night which in peak season would maybe be $1500. If u want to go to bora bora it’s a quick flight away. I had to cut my trip short so I didn’t get to do that. We went on a tour of the island which was pretty fun esp seeing secret waterfalls. If you want a more city feel with more options tahiti is the way to go in French Polynesia
Tahiti was very nice, if you’re looking to travel to the French Polynesia, Bora Bora is cute but Tahiti is overall better experience. You get the culture, the food, the shopping and the true island feel when you’re there. It’s more of a city vibe and you can still get all the beaches and explore the natural forests and vegetation that they have as well. I stayed at Intercontinental Resort it was definitely worth it as it’s close to the downtown area but far enough away to enjoy peace and quiet. Great for scuba diving and is definitely a place where you can relax and also enjoy a quiet time in a resort but it’s also very much the most LIVE place of all the French Polynesian islands. NOTE: to my brothers going on Bro trips their culture and history has a very interesting twist. In their families if they had 3 sons the third son would be raised as a woman. I know it sounds crazy but it’s true, hence there are a lot of beautiful “women” who are actually men so be careful, a couple of my homies had trouble with that no lie ???
