Zadar is probably one of the lesser known Croatian cities. which is a shame as it has a wonderful atmosphere that rivals some of the most stunning Italian cities. I mention Italy as Croatia has a particular vibe to it that reminds me of Venice, Italy for example. Zadar has lots of history and you’ll find lots of museums, churches and interesting landmarks such as a Sea Organ which makes music as the waves crash against it!

The highlight of my trip to Zadar was being able to visit Plitvice Lakes a national park like no other. You can visit Plitvice from a few Croatian cities, but from Zadar it was quite straightforward and relatively cheap to do. Plitvice is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and just googling the place will help you to see why. It’s a national park with waterfalls, but beware you can’t swim there. Also, be mindful that depending on the time of year you decide to go, there’s likely to be hundreds o tourists flocking to this special places. Such is the beauty of Plitvice.

Most of all Zadar is a relaxing place to enjoy good food, lovely weather and friendly people. I’ll be honest though, I travelled to Zadar in the summer of 2018 whilst the world cup was in session, so I don’t know if this was what coloured my experience (Croatia made it to the finals if you don’t remember, so the whole country was in a great mood for the duration of my trip!).

If you’re a beach lover Zadar also has some great beaches, though most are full of pebbles and not sand, it doesn’t make it any less beautiful in my opinion.

The old town deserves a special mention as this is where you can take romantic strolls and wander through the cobbled streets. Definitely a place to add to your itinerary if you’re ever in this part of the world.
