Canterbury is a really small town in the South East part of England. This city is known to receive about the least amount of rain and most amount of sunshine in all of the UK. With a population of about 80000(wild estimate) majority of the inhabitants are students as the city contains 3 higher education institutions.
Honestly, had it not been for the fact that I am enrolled at a University here I would not have even bothered to visit Canterbury, which would be quite a pity.
Canterbury, like many other places in England, is filled with ancient buildings and old relics. Canterburys old world charm is quite nice and there are traces of old roman times around the city including the ancient Roman city walls.
THINGS TO DO
1. Canterbury Cathedral ; The cathedrals origins date back to 597 AD when the archbishop first arrived in Kent and set up a Cathedral. Today, the cathedral is one of the oldest places of worship in all of the UK and is a UNESCO site. Visits to the cathedral end at 4:30pm during the week as choral evensong begins at 5pm . All visitors are welcome and although you are not allowed to take any photos during the service it is still a great experience to be in the cathedral for a service.
2. St. Augustine’s abbey ; A former monastery dating back to 598 AD . The abbey opens at 10am daily.
3. West gate Tower Museum and Viewpoint ; placed in the middle of the city just at the start of high street is the west gate towers. The towers are the largest surviving city gate in England. Even if you don’t want to go to the museum, the pub called the Pound is a great place to spent some time.
4. Canterbury Roman Museum
5. Westgate Gardens are located right next to westgate towers. There is a lovely park and an even more beautiful canal. You can get a canal ride that departs from the bridge right near WestGate towers. on a sunny day the park serves as a good place to have a picnic, read for a bit and feed the ducks.
If the attractions aren’t quite for you then you can certainly enjoy yourself by strolling down high street in the city centre. On Wednesdays and Fridays there are often several vendors out selling assorted goods and it becomes quite lovely. The area has a wide variety of pubs, bookshops, clothing stores and great restaurants so you can certainly spend your afternoon the right way.
Although quite small, Canterbury has its’ own unique charm. Even if you don’t want to spend a whole day here, Canterbury is close enough to Dover for you to make it a pit stop along the way. However, I think that some of the sites are definitely worth seeing.
